The platform diving was a diving event held as part of the diving at the 1904 Summer Olympics programme. It was the first time diving events were held at the Olympics. The competition was held on Wednesday, 7 September 1904. Five divers from two nations competed. Braunschweiger refused to dive-off for the bronze medal so it was only given to Kehoe. George Sheldon (diver)
George Herbert Sheldon (May 17, 1874 – November 25, 1907) was an American diver who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics and won the inaugural platform diving competition. Sheldon was an eye doctor from St. Louis, MO, who had studied at the Barnes Medical College in St. Louis, MO. Through most of his life he had suffered from a weak heart which would eventually result in his death. In the 1904 Olympics he won the gold medal in platform diving but faced controversy as his victory was contested by the Germans. The German competitors were more like stunt divers which was entertaining but on entry into the water they often landed on their bellies or legs, while the American team concentrated more on the entry rather than ''fancy diving''. It was not until a week later that the Games director James E. Sullivan rejected the protests and declared Sheldon the winner. Georg Hoffmann
Georg Hoffmann (1880–1947) was a German freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke swimmer and diver who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics and 1906 Intercalated Games. Hoffmann competed in three events at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, in the 100 yard backstroke there was only six swimmers and he finished in second place to win a silver medal behind fellow German Walter Brack, the next day he competed with three other swimmers in the 440 yard breaststroke and unfortunately came in last place. Hoffmann also competed in the controversial platform diving event, where he came second behind American George Sheldon but only after protesting claiming the German dives where more ''fancy'' than the Americans, and it was a week later until it was decided that the original result stood. The men's 10 metre platform, also known as the ''high diving'' competition, was one of two diving events on the diving at the 1908 Summer Olympics programme, along with the men's 3 metre springboard. The competition was held from Monday 20 to Friday 24 July 1908. Twenty-four divers from six nations competed. Each nation could enter up to 12 divers.Official Report, p. 40. Diving is the sport of jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard, usually while performing acrobatics. Diving is an internationally recognized sport that is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a recreational pastime.
