District No. 5 School (Alfred, Maine)
The District No. 5 School, also known as the Alfred Gore School, is an historic one room school at 781 Gore Road in Alfred, Maine. Built in 1872, it was used as a school until 1921, and was restored to its appearance of that time in the 2000s. It is the best-preserved of Alfred's surviving district school buildings, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 4, 2009. Description and history The District No. 5 School is located on the east side of Gore Road, a short way north of the rural village of North Alfred, and south of the road's junction with Avery Road. Set near the back of a grassy area surrounded by woods, it is a small wood-frame structure with a front-facing gable roof, clapboard siding, and a granite foundation. An open belfry, with four posts, a low balustrade, and decorative brackets, rises above the ridge of the roof, and is capped by a flared pyramidal roof. Alfred is a town in York County, Maine, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 3,073. Alfred is the seat of York County and home to part of the Massabesic Experimental Forest. National Register of Historic Places has two listings in the town, the Alfred Historic District, with 48 houses, and the Alfred Shaker Historic District. Villages in the town include Alfred, Alfred Mills, and North Alfred. The town is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area. History Abenaki Native Americans called the area Massabesic, meaning "large pond," or "the place of much water." It was in the western portion of a large tract of land purchased from Indian chiefs Fluellin, Hombinowitt and Meeksombe (also known as Captain Sunday), between 1661 and 1664 by Major William Phillips, an owner of mills in Saco (which then included Biddeford). Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there). The American style covers a wide range of picturesque buildings with "free Renaissance" (non-Gothic Revival) details, rather than being a specific formulaic style in its own right.
