District Grocery Stores (DGS) was a cooperative of small single-room grocery stores in Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia. It operated from 1921 to 1972.Supermarket Era Closes Cooperative" by William H. The cooperative started with 20 members and grew to 300 members at its peak, most of whom were Jews, Jewish immigrant families from Europe.
