District Council Of Alexandrina
The District Council of Alexandrina was a local government area in rural South Australia from 1856 to 1888. Based at Point Sturt on the western shore of Lake Alexandrina, it was formed in 1856 by secession from the District Council of Bremer when residents of the Hundred of Alexandrina area lobbied strongly for their own council. 32 years later in 1888 it was amalgamated back into the DC of Bremer. Point Sturt
Point Sturt is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Sturt Peninsula on the west side of Lake Alexandrina about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about east of the municipal seat of Goolwa. It is made up of rural living land holdings, primary production and grazing land. The beginning of Point Sturt Road is about 4 km from Clayton Bay and 9 km south of Milang, South Australia. At the end of Point Sturt road there are views across Lake Alexandrina to Raukkan. History Traditional Owners The area was originally inhabited by the Ngarrindjeri Nation which consisted of 18 Lakinyeri (clans). Lake Alexandrina (South Australia)
Lake Alexandrina is a coastal freshwater lake located between the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island and Murray and Mallee regions of South Australia, about south-east of Adelaide. The lake adjoins the smaller Lake Albert (together known as the Lower Lakes) and a coastal lagoon called The Coorong to its southeast, before draining into the Great Australian Bight via a short, narrow opening known as Murray Mouth. The District Council of Strathalbyn was a local government area in South Australia centred on the town of Strathalbyn from 1854 until 1997. From 1868 the township itself was locally governed by the Corporation of Strathalbyn but that entity was amalgamated back into the district council in 1976. History The District Council of Willunga was established on 18 August 1853 to govern the Hundred of Willunga and the southernmost portion of the Hundred of Kuitpo, one of the sets of earliest local government bodies to be created in the state.
