Dirty Three
Dirty Three is an Australian instrumental rock band, consisting of Warren Ellis (violin and bass guitar), Mick Turner (electric and bass guitars) and Jim White (drums), which formed in 1992. Their 1996 album ''Horse Stories'' was voted by ''Rolling Stone'' as one of the top three albums of the year. Two of their albums have peaked into the top 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart, ''Ocean Songs'' (1998) and ''Toward the Low Sun'' (2012). During their career they have spent much of their time overseas when not performing together. Turner is based in Melbourne, White lives in New York, and Ellis in Paris. MusicfestNW
MusicfestNW (MFNW) was a multi-venue music festival that took place every fall in Portland, Oregon from 2001 to 2018. In 2014 the format of the festival changed to a two-day waterfront music festival. The festival was organized by the alternative weekly ''Willamette Week''. Its sister festival, TechfestNW (TFNW), ran from 2012 to 2021. History In 1995, the creators of the South by Southwest festival partnered with the ''Willamette Week'' to create the North by Northwest Music Festival. In 2001, ''Willamette Week'' ended their sponsorship of NXNW, and started MusicfestNW in its place. At its height, MFNW was the third largest indoor music festival in the United States, with more than 150 bands across 18 of Portland's most popular music venues. The Moodists
The Moodists were an Australian post-punk band. They were formed in late 1980 by Dave Graney on lead vocals, Clare Moore on drums and Steve Miller on guitar, all from punk group the Sputniks. They added bass guitarist Chris Walsh in early 1981, and in April 1983 added guitarist Mick Turner (ex-Sick Things, Fungus Brains). They issued their sole studio album, ''Thirsty's Calling'', in April 1984. Turner left in January 1985 and the group disbanded in 1987. Warren Ellis Of The Dirty Three
A warren is a network of wild rodent or lagomorph, typically rabbit burrows. Domestic warrens are artificial, enclosed establishment of animal husbandry dedicated to the raising of rabbits for meat and fur. The term evolved from the medieval Anglo-Norman concept of free warren, which had been, essentially, the equivalent of a hunting license for a given woodland. Ian McFarlane
Ian McFarlane (born 1959) is an Australian music journalist, music historian and author, whose best known publication is the '' Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop'' (1999), which was updated for a second edition in 2017. As a journalist he started in 1984 with '' Juke'', a rock music newspaper. During the early 1990s he worked for Roadrunner Records while he published a music guide, ''The Australian New Music Record Guide Volume 1: 1976–1980'' (1992). He followed with two fanzines, ''Freedom Train'' and ''Prehistoric Sounds'', both issued during 1994 to 1996. McFarlane's ''The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop'' is described by the ''Australian Music Guide'' as "the most exhaustive and wide-ranging encyclopedia of Australian music from the 1950s onwards". Ocean Songs
''Ocean Songs'' is the fourth major album by Australian rock band Dirty Three, released in March 1998 by Touch and Go Records. The album was recorded at Electrical Audio, Chicago, United States, during August and September 1997. The cover art was designed by guitarist Mick Turner. On some tracks David Grubbs plays piano and harmonium. A special release version was issued by their UK record label Bella Union in 2005 that contained the original album along with a live DVD. In 2005, the album was performed live in London in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series, a performance that was later repeated in Barcelona and Mt Buller, Australia and as part of the 2009 ATP New York Festival (curated then by The Flaming Lips). Jim White (drummer)
Jim Ronald White (born 1962) is an Australian drummer, songwriter, and producer. In 1992 he formed Dirty Three, an instrumental rock band, with fellow mainstays Warren Ellis on violin; and Mick Turner on guitar. In Dirty Three, White sometimes shares songwriting duties with Ellis and Turner. White has also played with various other artists including PJ Harvey, Mark Kozelek, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Smog, The Blackeyed Susans, Kim Salmon's STM, Venom P.
