''Dirk'' is a stage play adapted from the novel ''Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency'' by Douglas Adams. History The original adaptation was by James Goss and Arvind Ethan David while still at school in 1991. In this form it was less than an hour long and "amusing but utterly incomprehensible". The same team expanded the script and, with the assistance of producer Matt Wreford, staged a student production from 30 May to 3 June 1995 at the Old Fire Station Theatre in Oxford. The production made use of computer animation to display some of the difficult scenes and concepts and was generally regarded as a success. SFX magazine said "As fine a piece of science fiction theatre as you are likely to find anywhere." Douglas Adams attended the last night and was delighted with the production. Anatoly Rybakov
Anatoly Naumovich Rybakov (russian: Анато́лий Нау́мович Рыбако́в; – 23 December 1998) was a Soviet and Ukrainian writer, the author of the anti-Stalinist ''Children of the Arbat ''trilogy, the novel ''Heavy Sand'', and many popular children books including ''Adventures of Krosh'', ''Dirk'' and ''Bronze Bird''. One of the last of his works was his memoir ''The Novel of Memoirs'' (Роман-Воспоминание) telling about all the different people (from Stalin and Yeltsin, to Okudzhava and Tendryakov) he met during his long life. Writer Maria Rybakova is his granddaughter. Biography Rybakov (the birth family name Aronov) was born in the city of Chernigov, Russian Empire (now Chernihiv, Ukraine) in a Jewish family. In 1934 he was arrested by the NKVD and exiled to Siberia for three years. After the end of his exile, he worked as a transport worker. During World War II, he was a tank commander. Dirk (), formerly Dirk van den Broek , is a supermarket chain that operates 121 stores in the Netherlands. History The original business was established in 1942 by Dirk van den Broek (1924-2020) as a milk store in Amsterdam. In 1948 it was converted into a self-service market. The first supermarket was opened in 1953, also in Amsterdam. In 1972 Dirk started the Digros formule located in Katwijk, in 1973 he bought the supermarkets from Bas van der Heijden which were located around Rotterdam. Cyclone Dirk was a large and deep European windstorm that affected Western Europe from the Iberian Peninsula to Iceland from 22 December 2013. Meteorological history Dirk formed over North America, some storminess was associated with the low in Canada, before it moved into the Atlantic. The preceding weather in North America saw a steep temperature gradient (temperatures in New York , Montreal ) which enhanced the jet stream in the North Atlantic. The low moved under this powerful jet stream where it explosively deepened before reaching Western Europe. Deepening below is considered uncommon in the North Atlantic, but has been recorded on a number of occasions, measured from ships transiting the ocean and from land based-recording stations.
