Director's Viewfinder
A director's viewfinder or director's finder is a viewfinder used by film directors and cinematographers to set the framing of a motion picture or movie camera. There are three types of director's viewfinders. Traditional The most traditional director's viewfinder looks like a short telescope, can be held easily in one hand and is often seen hanging from a lanyard on the director's neck. Sometimes called a "Tewe" in Europe (after a German company that manufactured them). The functionality of these devices is limited in that they only assist in observing the field of view of the lenses that will be used on the motion picture camera but not the characteristics of that lens. This type of viewfinder allows the user to select multiple camera formats, aspect ratios and focal lengths within a specific range. The depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and the furthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus in an image captured with a camera. Video assist is a system used in filmmaking which allows filmmakers to view and distribute a video version of a take immediately after it is filmed. Usage Originally developed to show the camera's view to more people than the one looking through the eyepiece, today video assist is the name of a complex system, consisting of monitors, recorders, video transmitters, video switchers, IT and RF equipment, and hundreds of yards of cables. BNCR Mount
BNCR is a lens mount developed by Mitchell Camera, Mitchell for use with its reflex 35mm movie film, 35 mm movie cameras (long back-focus; Bausch & Lomb Super Baltars and equivalents). It was an update of the BNC mount (short back-focus; Bausch & Lomb Baltars and equivalents) done to accommodate the reflex viewer in the later cameras. BNC mount lenses cannot be used in reflex Mitchell cameras as their shorter back-focus will hit and damage the reflex viewer, which, in various versions, was a pellicle (partially silvered) mirror or a (100% silvered, first surface) rotating mirror. A reflex finder is a viewfinder system with a mirror placed behind a lens. The light passing through the lens is reflected by the mirror to a focusing screen, usually ground glass. The image formed on this ground glass can be observed directly, giving a ''waist-level reflex finder,'' or through a redressing optical device (set of mirrors or prism) for eye-level viewing, giving an ''eye-level reflex finder''.
