Dinah Shore Trophy Award
The Dinah Shore Trophy Award is an annual award introduced in 1994 in honor of Dinah Shore that is given to one of the top collegiate female golfers. The award, which is administered by the LPGA Foundation and presented by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA), recognizes a female collegiate golfer who excels in both academics (GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale) and athletics – playing in at least 50 percent of the team's scheduled events – while maintaining a 78.00 or less scoring average. The nominees must also demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and community service. The Dinah Shore Trophy Award is a part of the Dinah Shore Scholarship Fund, a cooperative effort between the LPGA Foundation, the Friends of Golf (FOG), and the Nabisco Dinah Shore, one of the LPGA's four major championships and the largest contributor to the Dinah Shore Scholarship Fund. Dinah Shore
Dinah Shore (born Frances Rose Shore; February 29, 1916 – February 24, 1994) was an American singer, actress, and television personality, and the top-charting female vocalist of the 1940s. She rose to prominence as a recording artist during the Big Band era. She achieved even greater success a decade later, in television, mainly as the host of a series of variety programs for the Chevrolet automobile company. After failing singing auditions for the bands of Benny Goodman, and both Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Shore struck out on her own. She became the first singer of her era to achieve huge solo success. She had a string of 80 charted popular hits, spanning 1940–1957, and after appearing in a handful of feature films, she went on to a four-decade career in American television. She starred in her own music and variety shows from 1951 through 1963 and hosted two talk shows in the 1970s. The opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics took place on the evening of Friday 27 July 2012 in the Olympic Stadium, London, during which the Games were formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II. As mandated by the Olympic Charter, the proceedings combined the ceremonial opening of this international sporting event (including welcoming speeches, hoisting of the flags and the parade of athletes) with an artistic spectacle to showcase the host nation's culture. The spectacle was entitled ''Isles of Wonder'' and directed by Academy Award-winning British film director Danny Boyle. Prior to London 2012 there had been considerable apprehension about Britain's ability to stage an opening ceremony that could reach the standard set at the Beijing Summer Games of 2008.
