A Verbandsgemeinde (; plural Verbandsgemeinden) is a low-level administrative unit in the German federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt. A Verbandsgemeinde is typically composed of a small group of villages or towns. Rhineland-Palatinate The state of Rhineland-Palatinate is divided into 163 Verbandsgemeinden, which are municipal associations grouped within the 24 districts of the state and subdivided into 2,257 Ortsgemeinden (singular Ortsgemeinde) which comprise single settlements. Most of the Verbandsgemeinden were established in 1969. Formerly the name for an administrative unit was ''Amt''. Most of the functions of municipal government for several municipalities are consolidated and administered centrally from a larger or more central town or municipality among the group, while the individual municipalities (Ortsgemeinden) still maintain a limited degree of local autonomy. Hambach, Germany
Hambach is a municipality in the district of Rhein-Lahn, in Rhineland-Palatinate, in western Germany. It belongs to the association community of Diez. History Hambach was first mentioned in 1290 in a necrology from " Stift St. Lubentius zu Dietkirchen". Hambach belonged to the shire of Diez. From 1794 temporarily occupied by the French, the village became part of the Herzogtum Nassau, which was annexed to Prussia in 1866. Scheidt, Rhineland-Palatinate
Scheidt is a Ortsgemeinde ("legally distinct municipality"), in the municipal association of Diez in the district of Rhein-Lahn, in Rhineland-Palatinate, in western Germany. History Although the first written mention of the noble family name " von Scheyde", from Scheyde, goes back to the year 1348, the first mention of the town itself does not appear until 1364. However, it is believed that there were settlements here during the construction of Laurenburg Castle in the 11th century. In the mid-17th century it became part of the County of Holzappel. In 1806, Scheidt became part of the Duchy of Nassau in Diez Office, which was annexed by Prussia in 1866. Since 1946 it has been part of Rhineland-Palatinate. Laurenburg
Laurenburg is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district of Rhineland-Palatinate, in western Germany. The town, a health resort situated in the lower Lahn River valley, belongs to the Diez Municipal Association. History Laurenburg Castle is first mentioned in 1093 in the purported founding charter of the Maria Laach Abbey (a document some historians consider fabricated). A " Comes Dudo de Lurenburch", believed to be Dudo of Laurenburg (ca. 1060 - ca. 1123), is listed fifth on the witness list. Dudo, considered the founder of the aristocratic House of Nassau, is thought to be the builder of the castle (perhaps with his father Rupert, the Archbishop of Mainz’s Vogt in Siegerland). The seat of the House of Nassau was moved, under Dudo's sons Rupert I and Arnold I, to Nassau Castle around 1124.
