Dicle News Agency
Dicle Haber Ajansı, DIHA ( en, Dicle News Agency), is a "pro-Kurdish" news agency of Turkey. In March 2012 Reporters without Borders reported that 27 of its journalists were in prison. DIHA produces news reports on Turkish, Kurdish, and English DIHA had several times difficulties with the Turkish authorities and several of its journalists were arrested. In March 2009, following the coverage of the Newroz festivals in Siirt, Abdurrahman Gök was arrested and charged with making propaganda on behalf of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. Between December 2015 and May 2016, 12 of its journalists were arrested. Turkish authorities have blocked access to the website 40 times; the website changes its address every time it is blocked. Beyoğlu
Beyoğlu (, ota, بكاوغلی, script=Arab) is a district on the European side of İstanbul, Turkey, separated from the old city (historic peninsula of Constantinople) by the Golden Horn. It was known as the region of Pera (Πέρα, meaning "Beyond" in Greek language, Greek) surrounding the ancient coastal town Galata which faced Constantinople across the Horn. Abdurrahman Gök (born 17 April 1980, Kuyubaşı, Batman) is a journalist and the author of the photographs which documented the murder of Kemal Kurkut. Education He attended primary school in Kuyubaşı and received his secondary education in Batman. After he graduated from high school in 1997, he studied Arabic. The mass media in Turkey includes a wide variety of domestic and foreign periodicals expressing disparate views, and domestic newspapers are extremely competitive. However, media ownership is concentrated in the hands of a few large private media groups which are typically part of wider conglomerates controlled by wealthy individuals, which limits the views that are presented. 2016 Turkish Coup D'état Attempt
On 15 July 2016, a faction within the Turkish Armed Forces, organized as the Peace at Home Council, attempted a coup d'état against state institutions, including the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. They attempted to seize control of several places in Ankara, Istanbul, Marmaris and elsewhere, such as the Asian side entrance of the Bosphorus Bridge, but failed to do so after forces loyal to the state defeated them. The Council cited an erosion of secularism, elimination of democratic rule, disregard for human rights, and Turkey's loss of credibility in the international arena as reasons for the coup. The government said the coup leaders were linked to the Gülen movement, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the Republic of Turkey and led by Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish businessman and scholar who lives in Pennsylvania.
