Dick Hughes (footballer)
Richard Gwynedd Hughes (born 2 August 1902 – April 1984) was an English footballer who made over 290 appearances in the Football League playing as a right back. Career Hughes was captain of the England Schoolboys team then played locally for Castletown before signing as an amateur for Sunderland in July 1919. Joe Palmer signed Hughes in September 1920 for Bristol City. Hughes made his debut at right back replacing Lemmo Southway in a 2–0 win over Coventry City on 16 April 1921. Hughes made 4 appearances in season 1921–22 when Bristol City were relegated from the Second Division by a single point. The following season 1922–23 Hughes made 29 appearances as the "Robins" bounced back as Third Division South winners. Hughes shared the right back position with Ernie Glenn in the first season back in the Second Division making 15 appearances. Ernest Glenn (12 April 1902 – 25 February 1965) was an English footballer who played as a left back. Career Glenn played locally for Willenhall Town. Alex Raisbeck signed Glenn in May 1923 for Bristol City. Football League Third Division South
The Third Division South of The Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division North with clubs elected to the League or relegated from Division Two allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division South and the Third Division North according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. This division was created in 1921 from the Third Division, formed one year earlier when the Football League absorbed the leading clubs from the Southern League. John Swinley Taylor (17 September 1906 – 14 November 1967) was a Scottish footballer, who played as a left half & left back. He made 210 Football League appearances in the years after the First World War.- Career Jock Taylor played in Scotland for St Johnstone, Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers. Bob Hewison signed Taylor in October 1926 for Bristol City and he made his debut at left half in the FA Cup 0-2 defeat at Bournemouth on 15 December 1926. Taylor did not appear in the league side in 1926-27 when Bristol City won the Third Division South championship. Taylor made two appearances at full back late in 1927-28 then established a regular place at left half in the latter half of 1928-29 making 21 appearances as Bristol City just escaped relegation finishing 20th.
