Dick Evans (footballer)
Richard Evans (25 December 1875 – 13 January 1942) was an English footballer, who played at outside-right, spending most of his career with Burslem Port Vale as well as a two-year spell at Southampton where he won two Southern League championships. Career Burslem Port Vale Evans joined Burslem Port Vale from Newcastle White Star in November 1894. He scored his first Second Division goal on 5 January 1895, in a 2–2 draw at Crewe Alexandra. He went on to finish the 1894–95 season with six goals in 19 appearances. He scored four goals in 22 games in 1895–96, including one in a 5–4 win over Liverpool at the Athletic Ground. After the club were demoted from the Football League to the Midland League, Evans became the club's joint top-scorer with Danny Simpson two seasons running, with 14 goals in 1896–97 and 11 goals in 1897–98. Danny Simpson (early Footballer)
Daniel Simpson was an English footballer who scored 53 goals in 151 competitive games for Burslem Port Vale between 1896 and 1903. A centre-forward, he was twice the club's top-scorer and scored the only goal of the 1898 Staffordshire Senior Cup final. Career After a successful trial, Simpson played for Tunstall Town before joining Burslem Port Vale] in February 1896. He scored his first goal in the Football League Second Division, Second Division on 3 April 1896, in a 4–2 defeat to Newcastle United at St James' Park. He scored twice in 12 games in 1895–96, after which the club was demoted to the Midland League. John Fraser (footballer, Born 1876)
John Fraser (10 November 1876 – 1 October 1952) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an outside left. He was part of the Dundee team who won the Scottish Cup in 1910, having earlier played for Dumbarton, Motherwell, Notts County, Newcastle United, St Mirren and Southampton. He also represented both Scotland and the Scottish League XI. In addition, while with Dumbarton he earned a representative cap for Dumbartonshire against Glasgow in 1897, and played for both sides in the Home Scots v Anglo-Scots trial matches. He later went on to coach Dundee and Chelsea. Career Jack Fraser started his football career at the late age of 18 with his local club Dumbarton, where he appeared as part of the team that lost the Scottish Cup final 5–1 to Rangers in 1897. The Dell (Southampton)
The Dell in Milton Road, Southampton, Hampshire, England was the home ground of Southampton F.C. between 1898 and 2001. New stadium Since 1896, Southampton had been tenants of Hampshire County Cricket Club at the County Ground, having vacated the Antelope Ground in the summer of 1896. The rent payable to the cricket club (£200 p.a.) was putting a strain on the football club's finances and, in an attempt to reduce this burden, the club had considered a merger with the Freemantle club and a move to their ground in Shirley. The merger proposals had fallen through, but at the Extraordinary general meeting in June 1897, the members were informed that "''the committee had a ground in view''". Archie Turner
Arthur "Archie" Turner (June 1877 – 4 April 1925) was a professional footballer who played at outside-right in the 1900 and 1902 FA Cup Finals for Southampton, and made two appearances for England. Playing career Archie Turner was born in Hartley Wintney and began his professional career with Aldershot North End, before playing for South Farnborough and St. Michael's, Camberley. He had trials with Brentford and Reading before he was snapped up in May 1899 by Southampton who had just claimed the Southern League championship for the third consecutive year. In his first season at The Dell, Saints only managed third place in the league, but reached the FA cup final for the first time in their history.
