Dick Dolman
Dirk "Dick" Dolman (2 July 1935 – 23 January 2019) was a Dutch politician. In 1970, he became a member of the House of Representatives as a member of the Labour Party (PvdA). From 17 July 1979 to 14 September 1989 he was the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Biography Dolman was born in Empe, Netherlands. Empe
Empe is a village in the municipality of Brummen in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. Empe is located on the Apeldoorn-Zutphen railway, 4 km west of Zutphen. The NS railway station Voorst-Empe was reopened on 10 December 2006. The castle Huis Empe, built around 1550 lies on the edge of the village. History The village was first mentioned in 1046 as Suthempe. The etymology is unknown. The oldest forms have Sut (south) as prefix to distinguish between . The manor house Huis Empe was built around 1550. In 1710, it was bought by Thomas van Buerlo, mayor of Zutphen, and would remain in the family. It was redesigned in 1825 in neoclassic style. The south and the west wing were significantly altered in 1930. In late 1950, the east wing was turned into a clergy house. In 1983, the foundation Stichting Huis Empe was established to preserve the estate. It is currently used as residential houses. Empe was home to 544 people in 1840. Surreptitious advertising refers to secretive communication practices that might mislead the public about products or services. According to the Television Without Frontiers (TWF) Directive from the EU, misleading representations of products are considered intentional "in particular if it is done in return for payment or for similar consideration". History Edward Bernays resorted to surreptitious advertising for the American Tobacco Company back in the 1920s: Women, he discovered, regarded cigarettes in the 1920s as phallic symbols of male power and therefore unsuitable for women. Bernays tried to make smoking attractive to women for ATC. He employed a group of women and asked them to dress up like suffragettes and go on strike. The women marched through New York's Fifth Avenue, and when newspaper reporters photographed them, they lit cigarettes and proclaimed them "torches of freedom". The Tegenpartij (''Counterparty'', but also ''opponent'') was a Dutch fictional political party, founded in 1979 by the Dutch comedic duo Van Kooten en De Bie. They played the characters Jacobse and Van Es, two ''vrije jongens'' (''free guys'', literally), played by respectively Kees van Kooten and Wim de Bie. Jacobse and Van Es were originally two scoundrels, who eventually founded their own political party: The Tegenpartij. They described it as ''the party for all Dutchmen who can no longer stand the Netherlands''. Van Kooten and De Bie were trying to fight the populist tendencies of some of the other parties with their parody, but things turned out a bit differently: the Tegenpartij became so popular that it might well have gained several seats in parliament if it had actually taken part in elections. Mathilde Hubertine Maria Francisca "Til" Gardeniers-Berendsen (18 February 1925 – 22 October 2019) was a Dutch politician of the defunct Catholic People's Party (KVP) and later the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party and nonprofit director. Biography On 14 May 1940 Gardeniers-Berendsen witnessed the ''Luftwaffe'' bombing of Rotterdam during the German invasion and joined the Dutch resistance against the German occupiers in 1940. Following the end of World War II Gardeniers-Berendsen worked as a secretary in Rotterdam from August 1945 until May 1971. Gardeniers-Berendsen was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives after the election of 1971, taking office on 11 May 1971.
