Diane Hubka
Diane Hubka is an American jazz guitarist and vocalist. Career Hubka was born in Pleasantville, NY and took violin lessons at age 6–7, then trombone age 9, and guitar when she was eleven. She learned to play folk songs fingerstyle. In 1970, the family moved to Cumberland, MD. During the 1970s her influences were The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Allman Brothers. She was introduced to jazz in college by her guitar teacher, Bill Bittner, and joined his quartet as a vocalist. In 1980 she moved to Washington DC and performed in local clubs including Blues Alley and Charlie's Georgetown. In 1985 she moved to New York City, where she studied voice, guitar, and piano with Howard Alden, Gene Bertoncini, Connie Crothers, Harold Danko, Barry Harris, and Sheila Jordan. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. Romero Lubambo
Romero Lubambo (born 1955) is a Brazilian jazz guitarist. Career He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He grew up with American jazz and classical music in the house because his uncle played guitar, lived next door, and visited frequently. Lubambo tried classical piano for two years but quit. At thirteen, he picked up the guitar and taught himself how to play because there was no one else around to do it. The following year he joined a band and performed professionally for the first time. From 1972 to 1977, he attended the Villa-Lobos School of Music to study classical guitar. He went to college and got a degree in engineering in 1980, but he pursued music instead. After moving to the U.S. in 1985, he worked with singer Astrud Gilberto. During the next year, he met Herbie Mann, who Lubambo considered "my American father, my mentor for life." Anthony Wilson (musician)
Anthony Wilson (born May 9, 1968) is an American jazz guitarist, arranger and composer. He is the son of bandleader Gerald Wilson. Education and career Born in Los Angeles on May 9, 1968, Wilson received his degree in music composition from Bennington College. He counts Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Wes Montgomery, Ry Cooder, and T-Bone Walker among his influences. His first album '' Anthony Wilson'' was nominated for a Grammy Award and his second album, ''Goat Hill Junket'' (1998) also received praise. Albums with his nine-piece band include ''Adult Themes'' (MAMA, 1999) and ''Power of Nine'' (Groove Note, 2006). Diana Krall and mandolinist Eva Scow appear on the latter. Peter Sprague
Peter Tripp Sprague (born October 11, 1955) is an American jazz guitarist, record producer, and audio engineer. He owns SpragueLand Studios and the label SBE Records. He invented a twin-neck guitar with one neck from a classical guitar and one from a steel-string acoustic guitar. Sprague studied with guitarist Pat Metheny, Madame Chaloff, and classical guitarist Albin Czak, and has played with Chick Corea, Hubert Laws, Larry Coryell, David Benoit, and Sergio Mendes. He has produced or played on over 190 recordings. He has published music books, several of which are his transcriptions of his music, and has transcribed songbooks for Chick Corea. He composed and performed a guitar concerto with the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra in May 2000 and with the San Diego Symphony in May 2002 and performed a number of times at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. Mimi Fox is an American jazz guitarist and educator, known internationally for her work. Career Fox's mother was a jazz singer and her father owned a large record collection that she heard from an early age. After watching the Monkees and the Beatles, she became interested in guitar at the age of ten. She taught herself to play by listening to the Beatles album ''Rubber Soul''. In her teens, she played drums at school. Her professional career began at the age of seventeen when she performed in the lounge of a Chinese restaurant. Ron Escheté
Ronald Patrick Escheté (born August 19, 1948) is an American seven-string jazz guitarist. He is the first person to record a cover version of "Christmas Time Is Here", which Vince Guaraldi wrote for the Charlie Brown television program. Career When Escheté was fourteen, he began playing guitar. During the late 1960s, he studied classical guitar and flute at Loyola University in New Orleans. From 1969–1970, he worked in Las Vegas supporting singer Buddy Greco. He moved to Los Angeles, where he played with Dave Pike and Gene Harris.
