Dharma Records is a British independent record label. Dharma Records was established in 2002 to run alongside its sister company Instant Karma. Dharma's first release was the top 5 hit single, "Mundian To Bach Ke", by Bhangra artist Panjabi MC. Artists Dharma Records' artists include the Mercury-Prize-nominated Helicopter Girl, electronic acts I Monster (from Sheffield, best known for hit single ''Daydream in Blue'') and Eberg (from Iceland) both of whose work has featured in many hit films, TV shows and TV ads, including the opening theme of Shaun of the Dead and the TV ad which launched the iPhone in the US, plus modern classical artists such as Ghostland, Caroline Dale, Donna McKevitt and OperaBabes. Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Instant Karma (record Label)
Instant Karma is an independent record label created by former Warner Music Group chairman and head of the BPI, Rob Dickins, in 1999. The label was founded by Dickins after his resignation from Warner Music, where he gained fame for his track record of signing female vocalists such as Enya and the Corrs. Instant Karma's first release was Helicopter Girl's ''How to Steal the World'' album in June 2000; the label received attention for the fact that its very first release was short-listed for the Mercury Prize. Helicopter Girl signed with Instant Karma on the condition that she be permitted not to tour. Dickins noted that he was pleased to have ''How to Steal the World'' as the label's "calling card", but that he planned other releases to have more immediate commercial appeal. Helicopter Girl
Helicopter Girl (born 15 August 1963) is the stage name of Jacqueline Margaret “Jackie” Joyce, a musician from Perth, Scotland. She was born to a Scottish mother and Ghanaian father. She was previously a member of the groups Mouth Music and Ambisonic. Music career Her first album was 2000's ''How to Steal the World'', which was nominated for a Mercury Prize. Also, in 2001, she appeared on the Rod Stewart album, ''Human'', performing with him on the track "Don't Come Around Here." Joyce then took an extended break from the business before writing and recording her second album, ''Voodoo Chic'', which featured the single "Angel City," and was released in 2004. The album ''Metropolitan'' was released in June 2008. It was preceded by the single "It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This". I Monster
I Monster are an English electronic music duo, composed of the Sheffield based record producers Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling. I Monster and its label Twins of Evil are both named after horror films starring Peter Cushing (i.e., ''I, Monster'' and ''Twins of Evil''). History Formation and ''These Are Our Children'' I Monster formed in 1997 and released their debut album ''These Are Our Children'' in 1998. However, due to Honer being involved with hitmakers All Seeing I, it was not until 2001 that they released their first single, "Daydream in Blue", a remix of The Gunter Kallmann Choir's version of The Wallace Collection's "Daydream". The song was originally released on 7" on Honer's own record label Cercle Records, which he founded with Add N to (X)'s Barry Seven. Eberg
Einar Tönsberg, also known as Eberg, is an Icelandic musician. Musical career Eberg released his first album, ''Plastic Lions'' in August 2003, creating 50 hand-made copies, and selling them at £15. ''Plastic Lions'' was also mass-produced and distributed by Bad Taste in Iceland, and in July 2004 by Rotator in the UK. The album received rave reviews in the press in 2004. The song "Plastic Lions", his debut single, received airplay on BBC Radio 1. Eberg’s second album ''Voff Voff'' has a more organized arrangement of acoustics and electronics that made most of the songs on the album hits in the UK and Iceland. Eberg explains, "Voff Voff is how Icelandic dogs bark, I’ve always tended to be a bit of a barker. I like barking in public and I do way too much of it when I get drunk, and that’s how Icelandic dog barks, hence the name of the album, ''Voff Voff''." Caroline Dale
Caroline Dale (born 1965) is a widely recorded British cellist who currently plays principal cello for the English Chamber Orchestra and London Metropolitan Orchestra. She has also performed music for numerous films and played with a wide range of pop and rock musicians, including Joan Armatrading, Peter Gabriel, David Gilmour, David Gray, Oasis, Simply Red, Sinéad O'Connor and U2. Biography Born in Middlesbrough, Caroline Dale studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Florence Hooton, and later with Pierre Fournier in Geneva. Donna McKevitt (born 1970) is an English composer based in London. She studied viola with Gustav Clarkson and voice with Linda Hirst and gained a BA Hons in music at Kingston Polytechnic. The Opera Babes are an English crossover classical music duo, consisting of Karen England, mezzo-soprano, and Rebecca Knight, soprano. The duo came to wide attention when they sang "Un bel dì vedremo" (from the opera ''Madame Butterfly'') on television sports programmes, beginning in 2002. Alexander Wolfe (musician)
Alexander Wolfe (born 24 December 1981) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Early life Born Alexander Gordon in Cambridge, he moved to Woolwich in South East London as a child. Upon leaving school he formed his first band, 'Taxi', with Jamie Cullum, after a chance encounter in a guitar shop on London's Denmark Street. The band toured supporting Paul Weller before finally imploding in the summer of 2002 due, partly, to Cullum's pending solo deal with Universal and partly due to musical differences. Megan Henwood
Megan Henwood (born 29 October 1987) is an English singer-songwriter from Oxfordshire. Early life Born Megan Rosemary Henwood in Reading, Berkshire, England, Henwood grew up in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Her first public performance was at the age of 9 at the Henley Youth Festival. As a teenager she performed both as a solo artist and with her band on the local live circuit. At the age of 18, she travelled around Europe, Thailand, India, Malaysia, and Nepal – returning to the latter twice to record and perform with some of the country's musicians. She has since supported the London-based Child Action Nepal charity by donating profit from record sales.
