Devon Dermott Mitchell (born December 30, 1962 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a former American football safety in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 1986 NFL Draft. He played college football at Iowa. Safety (American Football Position)
Safety is a position in gridiron football on the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. While American (11-player) formations generally use two safeties, Canadian (12-player) formations generally have one safety and two defensive halfbacks, a position not used in the American game. The 1986 NFL draft was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held April 29–30, 1986, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, New York. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. The Iowa Hawkeyes are the athletic teams that represent the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, Iowa.
