''Devil's Got Your Tongue'' is the fifteenth album by Abbey Lincoln, and her third for Verve Records. It was released on October 13, 1992. The album peaked at number two on the ''Billboard'' Jazz Albums chart on April 10, 1993. Critical reception A reviewer for AllMusic stated: "Her interpretive skills and emotional commitment to the material are such that she can even take on a familiar standard like 'A Child Is Born' and make it her own. It's gratifying to see a major jazz label allowing Lincoln's musical vision to flourish and grow." The authors of ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' wrote: "Vocally and musically, the material is too dense, almost as if she is trying to recapture the contours of the old Candid sessions, but not recognizing that modern recording and production will tend to swamp arrangements like this." Verve Records is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group (UMG). "A Child Is Born" is a jazz instrumental that was later recorded with lyrics added. It was written in 1969 by the jazz trumpeter Thad Jones with lyrics added independently by Alec Wilder after hearing the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra perform the instrumental. Michael Babatunde Olatunji (April 7, 1927 – April 6, 2003) was a Nigerian drummer, educator, social activist, and recording artist. Early life Olatunji was born in the village of Ajido, near Badagry, Lagos State, in southwestern Nigeria. A member of the Ogu people, Olatunji was introduced to traditional African music at an early age. His name, Bàbátúndé, means 'father has returned', because he was born two months after his father, an Ogu (Egun) man, Zannu died, and Olatunji was considered to be a reincarnation. His father was a local fisherman who was about to rise to the rank of chieftain, and his mother was a potter who was a member of the Ogu people. Stanley William Turrentine (April 5, 1934 – September 12, 2000) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He began his career playing R&B for Earl Bostic and later soul jazz recording for the Blue Note label from 1960, touched on jazz fusion during a stint on CTI in the 1970s. He was described by critic Steve Huey as "renowned for his distinctively thick, rippling tone ndearthy grounding in the blues." Yoron Dael Israel (born November 24, 1963, Chicago) is an American jazz drummer. Israel learned to play organ and trumpet as a child, then switched to drums. As a high school student, he played in an R&B group led by his uncle. He took his bachelor's degree at Roosevelt University and his master's degree at Rutgers, then became the drummer in a house band for a Chicago jazz club and worked with Hank Crawford, David Friedman, Von Freeman, and Ira Sullivan. Grady Tate (January 14, 1932 – October 8, 2017) was an American jazz and soul-jazz drummer and baritone vocalist. In addition to his work as sideman, Tate released many albums as leader and lent his voice to songs in the animated '' Schoolhouse Rock!'' series. Biography Tate was born in Hayti, Durham, North Carolina, United States. In 1963 he moved to New York City, where he became the drummer in Quincy Jones's band. He has been described as a "hard swinging player and composer with a delightful Thelonious Monk, Monkish wit and drive". Career At twenty-one, Kendrick began a primary focus on jazz, moving to New York City in 1981.
