Devenish, Victoria
Devenish is a town in northern Victoria, Australia within the Rural City of Benalla local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Devenish and the surrounding area had a population of 360, declining to 197 by 2016. History The Post Office opened on 9 June 1877 as Broken Creek and was renamed Devenish in 1878. In 1883 on the arrival of the railway, the office was moved and named Devenish Railway Station, reverting to Devenish in about 1889 as the township developed. An earlier office dating from 1870, Major Plains, was known as Devenish from 1874 until 1878. The Devenish concrete grain silos were built between the railway line and the main street and opened to receive wheat in December 1943. Later the Bulk Oat storage building was built in 1965. Ross Devenish
Ross Devenish (born 15 November 1939) is a South African film director. His 1980 film '' Marigolds in August'' was entered into the 30th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Berlin Bear Anniversary Prize. His 1977 feature film ''The Guest'' won a Bronze Leopard at Locarno International Film Festival. Ross also directed the eight-part adaptation of ''Bleak House'' which won three BAFTAs. ''Now that the Buffalo's Gone'' won a Blue Riband Award. He was one of the two directors engaged on ''Goal!'' about the World Cup Competition being held in England in 1966. ''Goal!'' received the Robert Flaherty Award from BAFTA. Personal Ross Devenish studied film-making in London. Devenish Brewery
Devenish Brewery, also known as J. A. Devenish & Co. Ltd, was a brewery in Weymouth, Dorset, Weymouth, Dorset, England, that was founded in 1821 by William Devenish. It primarily operated from Weymouth's Hope Square, but also had a facility at Redruth, Cornwall. Devenish was sold to De Vere (hotel operator), Greenalls in 1993. History Devenish Brewery originated with the Flew Brewery, which had operated from Hope Square since 1742. William Devenish acquired a lease of the brewery in 1821 and then purchased it three years later. The brewery retained the Flew name until 1851, when it was changed to J. A. Devenish & Co. Ltd. The company acquired the Cornish Brewery Co. Ltd at Redruth in 1934 (later renamed Devenish Redruth Brewery Co Ltd in 1960) and the Weymouth-based rival Groves & Sons Ltd in 1960. Benalla & District Football League
The original Benalla District Football League was formed in 1929 from the following clubs - Baddaginnie, Benalla - "B", Swanpool, Tatong, Thoona and Winton. The Benalla & District Football League (B&DFL) was formed immediately after World War Two in 1946 and an Australian rules football competition based in the Benalla region of Victoria, Australia and ran until 2009. History The B&DFL was formed in 1946 and superseded the former Tatong & Thoona Football Association after World War Two. Devenish Chase
The Devenish Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt steeplechase in Ireland which is open to horses aged five years or older. It is run at Fairyhouse over a distance of about 2 miles and 4 furlongs (4,023 metres), and during its running there are sixteen fences to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year on Easter Monday. The race was run for the first time in 2018. It was created when Fairyhouse and Navan agreed to swap the distances of their two Graded Chases scheduled for the spring. The Webster Cup Chase held at Navan is now run over 2 miles (previously 2 miles 4 furlongs) and the Normans Grove Chase, at Fairyhouse, (2 miles 1 furlong) was replaced by this race over 2 miles and 4 furlongs.
