François-Antoine Devaux
François-Antoine Devaux (12 December 1712, in Lunéville – 11 April 1796, or 22 germinal year IV, Lunéville) was a Lorraine (province), Lorraine (and, after 1766, French) poet and man of letters. He was called ''Panpan'' by his friends. Life Devaux trained as a lawyer and worked briefly for a lawyer cousin in Nancy, France, Nancy. He soon quit to live with his parents in Lunéville, resisting their efforts to make him marry and earn a living. His dream was to become a writer, an ambition encouraged by his friend Françoise de Graffigny, who became his sponsor in the court society of Lorraine. They collaborated on several literary projects and confided in each other about their problems, both financial and emotional. In the 1730s Devaux wrote a one-act prose play, called ''Les Portraits'', which was accepted by the Comédie-Française; but the troupe stalled on performing the play, and for about fifteen years Devaux struggled to get it staged. Henri Devaux
Henri Edgard Devaux (6 July 1862 – 14 March 1956) was a French botanist, biophysicist, and plant physiologist who worked on gas exchange and membranes. In his studies on thin films, he was one of the pioneers of surface chemistry and molecular biophysics. Devaux was born in Etaules and went to study pharmacy at the University of Bordeaux with a scholarship. He then went to the University of Sorbonne and received a doctorate in 1889 for work under Gaston Bonnier on gas exchange in plant tissues. In 1896 he noted the absorption of metal ions in the cell membranes of aquatic plants and examined ion exchange through the effects of sodium of potassium ion concentrations in the surroundings. He became the first chair of plant physiology at the University of Bordeaux in 1906 after spending time in the University of Dijon. From 1903 he began to take an interest in the physics of surfaces. André Devaux
Jean André Devaux (4 August 1894 – 28 February 1981) was a French sprinter. In 1914 he won the national 400 m title, and in 1920 he was part of the French 4 × 400 m relay that won an Olympic bronze medal. He missed the 1924 Games due to an injury. Philippe Devaux (1902–1979) was a French-speaking Belgian philosopher and logician, professor at the University of Liège. Through his numerous works and translations (he was the translator and friend of Bertrand Russell), he played a great part in the development of analytic philosophy in French-speaking countries.
