Dev Ashish
Sri Dev Ashish (1946–2017) was an Australian-born Indian spiritual leader who ran the Mirtola ashram in Uttarakhand from 1997 to 2017. Biography Sri Dev Ashish was born David Beresford in Sydney in 1946 to Nelson Venters Beresford, a Surrey-born farmer in Turramurra, and his artist wife Ethelene Flora (née Venables). The Beresfords were interested in Eastern spirituality and spent time in India, first as followers of Jiddu Krishnamurti and later at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, and David grew up in Kumaon. Though they had originally intended to place David in a biodynamic farm in England, the Beresfords instead moved to Mirtola, then managed by two British-born gurus, Sri Krishna Prem and his disciple Sri Madhava Ashish. Mirtola
Mirtola is a village 10 km away from Almora, in Uttarakhand state in India. It is best known for an ashram by the same name, also called Uttar Brindaban ("Brindaban of the North"), set up by Sri Yashoda Ma, a housewife turned ascetic in the 1930, along with her disciple Sri Krishna Prem (1898–1965), a mystic of the 20th Century. The ashram was later run by his disciple, Sri Madhava Ashish (1920–1997), another Briton, who also later settled in India. Mirtola is en route to Pithoragarh from Almora, 3 km to the left of the main road after Panuanaula, 25 km after Almora. The place is also known for a Radha-Krishna temple, Uttar Brindaban, built in 1931 by Sri Yashoda Ma, the founder and the spiritual head of the ashram. George Gurdjieff
George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (; rus, Гео́ргий Ива́нович Гурджи́ев, r=Geórgy Ivánovich Gurdzhíev, p=ɡʲɪˈorɡʲɪj ɪˈvanəvʲɪd͡ʑ ɡʊrd͡ʐˈʐɨ(j)ɪf; hy, Գեորգի Իվանովիչ Գյուրջիև; c. 1866–1877 – 29 October 1949) was an Armenian philosopher, mystic, spiritual teacher, and composer of Armenian and Greek descent, born in Alexandropol, Russian Empire (now Gyumri, Armenia). Gurdjieff taught that most humans do not possess a unified consciousness and thus live their lives in a state of hypnotic "waking sleep", but that it is possible to awaken to a higher state of consciousness and achieve full human potential.
