Luge
A luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine (face up) and feet-first. A luger steers by using the calf muscles to flex the sled's runners or by exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Racing sleds weigh for singles and for doubles. The Deutscher Turn- und Sportbund (DTSB; ''German Gymnastics and Sports Federation'') was a mass organization of the German Democratic Republic from 1957 until shortly after German reunification. Membership in the organization included nearly four million people, which accounted for almost 20% of the population of the GDR. History Founded in 1957, the DTSB was the last major mass organization to be created by the East German government, and was the central agency responsible for mass sport. The federation consisted of individual sports associations within the country, ranging from sailing to chess. Oberhof, Germany
Oberhof is a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district of Thuringia, Germany. Located in the Thuringian Forest mountain range, it is a winter sports center and health resort. Martin Kilian
Martin Kilian (21 May 1928–2 July 2014) was an East German bobsledder and politician of the Socialist Unity Party. He served as president of both the Deutscher Turn- und Sportbund and the Deutscher Schlitten- und Bobsportverband in the final decade of the GDR and served as mayor of Wernigerode for almost thirty years. Biography Martin Kilian was born in 1928 in Lower Silesia, then still a part of Germany. After the expulsion of Germans from Silesia during and after World War II, Kilian settled in Nachterstedt and was employed as a miner before moving to Wernigerode. He joined the newly-formed SED in 1948. In 1950, Kilian became active in bobsledding and began working as a schoolteacher the following year. By the end of the decade he was made principal of the Wilhelm Rabbe High School. Upon the death of mayor Gustav Strahl, he became mayor of Wernigerode in 1962.
