Deutscher Pfadfinderverband
The Deutsche Pfadfinderverband (DPV; approximate translation: ''German Scout Association'') is an umbrella federation of sixteen German non-denominational Scouting associations. It was founded in 1970 and serves about 29,000 members. History The DPV was founded in 1970 under the name ''Deutsche Pfadfinder'' by a number of regional organizations which had left the Bund Deutscher Pfadfinder (BDP) due to the perceived loss of political neutrality within the latter. In 1971, the Deutscher Pfadfinderbund joined the ''Deutsche Pfadfinder'' and the federation was renamed to ''Deutscher Pfadfinderverband''. However, the Deutscher Pfadfinderbund left the federation after some years. In 1977, the DPV was amongst the founding members of the Deutscher Pfadfinderring (DPR); this traditional Scouting federation tried to form a counterweight to the Ring deutscher Pfadfinderverbände and the Ring Deutscher Pfadfinderinnenverbände. Scouting And Guiding In Germany
The Scout movement in Germany consists of about 150 different associations and federations with about 260,000 Scouts and Guides. History Scouting in Germany started in 1909. After World War I, German Scouting became involved with the German Youth Movement, of which the Wandervogel was a part. Another group that, while short-lived, was influential on later German Scouting, was the Deutsche Jungenschaft vom 1.11.1929 founded by Eberhard Koebel; some specifics of German Scouting derive from Koebel's group. German Scouting flourished until 1934-35, when nearly all associations were closed and their members had to join the Hitler Youth. In West Germany and West Berlin, Scouting was reestablished after 1945, but it was banned in East Germany until 1990 in favor of the Thälmann Pioneers and the Free German Youth. The Pfadfinderbund Weltenbummler e.V. ''(Scouts' Association Globetrotter)'' is an inter-confessional and apolitical German Scout association founded in 1981. It has about 2000 members and is part of the World Federation of Independent Scouts (WFIS), the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE), the German Scout Association (DPV), the Bavarian Scout Council and the German Parity Welfare Association. Ludwigstein Castle
Ludwigstein Castle (german: Burg Ludwigstein) is a 15th-century castle overlooking the river Werra and surrounded by woodland. It stands southwest of the town of Witzenhausen in North Hesse. Founded in 1415 the castle's buildings today were built in the 16th and 20th centuries. It was allowed to go to ruin in the late 19th century. After the First World War, the Wandervogel and German Youth Movement joined together to save the castle. In 1920 they founded the Jugendburg Ludwigstein Association to buy the structure, renovate it, and erect a memorial to the fifty thousand Wandervogel who had been killed from 1914 to 1918. During the Nazi period, however, the castle became first a training center for the Hitler Youth, then a destination for city children evacuated to avoid air raids during the Second World War. The Ring Deutscher Pfadfinderinnenverbände (RDP; ''German Guide Federation'') is the German national Guiding organization within the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). It serves 47,688 members (as of 2008).
