Destry Rides Again (musical)
''Destry Rides Again'' is a 1959 musical comedy with music and lyrics by Harold Rome and a book by Leonard Gershe. The play is based on the 1939 film of the same name. Production history The show opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre on April 23, 1959, and closed on June 18, 1960, after 472 performances. Michael Kidd was the director and choreographer. The cast starred Andy Griffith as Destry and Dolores Gray as Frenchy. The national tour starred John Raitt and Anne Jeffreys, while Yvonne De Carlo appeared in the show in such venues as the Paper Mill Playhouse and the Dallas Summer Musicals. The plot was loosely based on a story by Max Brand. The song sung by Marlene Dietrich in the film, "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have", was not used in the stage production. Harold Rome
Harold Jacob "Hecky" Rome (May 27, 1908 – October 26, 1993) was an American composer, lyricist, and writer for musical theater. Biography Rome was born in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Hartford Public High School. Originally, he chose to go to Trinity College, but transferred because he felt like a "townie". Rome played piano in local dance bands such as Eddie Wittstein's and was already writing music while studying architecture and law at Yale University. While at Yale, he also pledged to Tau Epsilon Phi. He graduated in 1929 with a Bachelor of Arts, and continued into Yale Law School. After graduation, he worked as an architect in New York City, but continued to pursue his musical interests, arranging music for local bands, and writing material for revues at Green Mansions, a Jewish summer resort in the Adirondacks. The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre. Marc Breaux
Marc Breaux (November 3, 1924 – November 19, 2013) was an American choreographer and occasional film director best known for his work on musical films of the 1960s and 1970s. Most of his well-known work was in collaboration with Dee Dee Wood to whom he was married for many years. Much of Breaux's best recognized work was also in collaboration with the songwriting Sherman Brothers. In 1948 he appeared on Broadway in the original cast of ''Kiss Me, Kate'' at the New Century Theatre in New York City and in 1958 he appeared in ''Li'l Abner'' at the St. James Theatre, also in New York City. Marc Breaux with Dee Dee Wood, choreographed the Broadway musical ''Do-Re-Mi,'' from 1960 through 1962. John Trevathian Upchurch Jr. (January 19, 1920 – January 8, 1994), professionally known as Jack Prince, was a singer and an occasional actor who incorporated his mother's maiden name into his professional name of Prince. He performed in Broadway plays, sang in nightclubs, and was a regular on a 1955 television variety show. Prince is best remembered for playing Rafe Hollister on ''The Andy Griffith Show''. Arthur Lund (April 1, 1915 – May 31, 1990) was an American baritone singer, initially with bandleaders Benny Goodman and Harry James, and was also a television and stage actor. Biography Arthur Lund was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, and received his master's degree from the United States Naval Academy in aerological engineering. Lund was a high school math teacher in Kentucky who worked as a musician on the side. He left teaching to tour with Jimmy Ray and his band. He originally billed himself as Art London. He found work early on as a vocalist with a band led by clarinetist Jimmy Joy. "The Boys in the Back Room" is a song written by Frank Loesser, set to music by Frederick Hollaender and performed by Marlene Dietrich in the film ''Destry Rides Again'' (1939). It is often referred to as "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have". Her winking performance was a parody of her vampish roles in earlier films such as ''The Blue Angel'' (1930) and ''Blonde Venus'' (1932).
