Despite Straight Lines
''Despite Straight Lines'' is the only studio album by British singer-songwriter Marilyn, released in 1985. Overview Although Marilyn had scored three top 40 hits throughout the 1983–84 period, his debut album was not released until mid-1985, 18 months after his biggest hit " Calling Your Name" was a top 10 hit. Possibly due to a loss of momentum, the album only charted in Australia, and subsequent singles taken from it were also unsuccessful. The album was reissued on CD in 2008 as ''Despite Straight Lines: The Very Best of Marilyn'', by Cherry Pop (a division of Cherry Red Records). The reissue includes several bonus tracks, consisting of B-sides and alternative versions, though it excludes the single "Pray for That Sunshine". Marilyn (singer)
Peter Robinson (born 3 November 1962), better known as Marilyn, is an English singer. He is known for his 1983 hit " Calling Your Name" and his androgynous appearance. Early life Robinson was born in Kingston, Jamaica. At age five, he moved with his mother to Borehamwood, England. He left school at 15, and has stated that he was bullied at school for being feminine, and that he self-harmed. The Marilyn persona As a boy, Robinson loved Marilyn Monroe's image, and Marilyn became his school nickname. While the name originated from homophobic bullies at school, Robinson decided to appropriate it to his advantage. As a teenager, he was a regular nightclub-goer and wanted to look different, so he adopted a Marilyn Monroe image wearing vintage dresses with bleached blond hair. Paul Caplin
Paul Caplin (born 31 December 1954 in London, England) is an English businessman, musician, videographer and entrepreneur. Caplin studied as a mathematician at Imperial College, London and at Cambridge University. His career has spanned music, information technology and filmmaking. Musical career Caplin began his musical career in his early twenties in the New Romantic rock group Animal Magnet, and co-wrote their dance track, "Welcome to the Monkey House" (1981). Animal Magnet supported Duran Duran on their first national tour. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations. Claudia Fontaine
Claudia Fontaine (26 August 1960 – 13 March 2018) was an backing vocalist from Peckham, London. Career During the 1980s, Fontaine and fellow backing vocalist Caron Wheeler (and later, third member Naomi Thompson) were known as Afrodiziak. She made an appearance in the video "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)" with Soul II Soul. She joined a number of lovers rock trios, including Mellow Rose, One Love, and True Harmony, then emerged as a soloist. In 1981, she sang a massive Lover's Rock hit " Natural High". Cherry Red Records is a British independent record label founded in Malvern, Worcestershire by Iain McNay in 1978. New Wave Music
