Des and Dawn Lindberg were a South African husband and wife folk musical group who won a SARIE award in 1971 and 1973 for best vocal group. Their first album, Folk on Trek was banned by the Apartheid government. Their song, The Seagull's Name Was Nelson entered the charts at Number 8 in June 1971, reaching number 4 and spending twelve weeks on the charts. Dawn Lindberg
Dawn Lindberg (14 April 1945 – 7 December 2020) was a South African folk singer, actress, theatre producer, director and founder of the South African Naledi Theatre Awards, but was more commonly known for her part in the musical folk group '' Des and Dawn'' with her husband Des Lindberg. Her career spanned almost six decades. Early life Dawn was born in Durban, South Africa in 1945 and was one of seven children. She would attend Parktown Girls High School in Johannesburg. As high school student, she was a AFS exchange student and was based in Detroit, Michigan in the United States, and would meet President John F. Kennedy on a trip to Washington, DC. After completing high school in 1961, she attended the University of the Witwatersrand where she studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Gallo Record Company is the largest (and oldest independent) record label in South Africa. It is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is owned by Arena Holdings. The current Gallo Record Company is a hybrid of two South African record labels, rivals between the 1940s and 1980s: the original Gallo Africa (1926–85) and G.R.C.
