Dermot Seymour
Dermot Seymour ''RUA'' (b.1956) is a Northern Irish painter, an elected member of Aosdána and an Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts. His work explores a variety of themes relating to conflict, symbolism and identity in Northern Ireland. Life & work Dermot Seymour was born and raised on the lower Shankill Road in Belfast. Seymour studied graphic design at the Ulster Polytechnic between 1975–78, where he was to return in 1981 attaining an Advanced Diploma in Art and Design. Seymour's work is a reaction to growing up at the height of The Troubles. He juxtaposes idyllic landscapes with a host of other elements, ranging from farm animals to military helicopters, exploring symbolism and identity to show the absurdities inherent in Northern Irish society. In doing so he exposes the tensions between militarization and the ordinary rural and urban communities. Aosdána
Aosdána ( , ; from , 'people of the arts') is an Irish association of artists. It was created in 1981 on the initiative of a group of writers with support from the country's Arts Council. Membership, which is by invitation from current members, is limited to 250 individuals; before 2005 it was limited to 200. Its governing body is called the Toscaireacht. Formation Aosdána was originally set up on the suggestion of writer Anthony Cronin, by ''Taoiseach'' Charles Haughey, well known for his support for the Arts, although Fintan O'Toole has argued that this also served to deflect criticism of Haughey's political actions. Membership The process of induction relies entirely on members proposing new members. Applications by artists themselves are not allowed. Marten Toonder
Marten Toonder (2 May 1912 – 27 July 2005) was a Dutch comic strip creator, born in Rotterdam. He was probably the most successful comic artist in the Netherlands and had a great influence on the Dutch language by introducing new words and expressions. He is most famous for his series ''Tom Puss'' and ''Panda''. Tom Puss/Oliver B. Bumble series In 1931 after his final exams, Marten Toonder went to Buenos Aires with his father. Here he got acquainted with the work of the well-known Argentine artist and editor Dante Quinterno, who ran a studio producing comics. Quinterno's creations impressed him to such a degree that he decided to become an artist himself. His most famous comic series were the Tom Puss (''Tom Poes'' in Dutch) and Oliver B. Bumble (''Olivier B. Bommel'' in Dutch) series that appeared in a Dutch newspaper from 1941–86. It has a very characteristic format. Ulster Museum
The Ulster Museum, located in the Botanic Gardens in Belfast, has around 8,000 square metres (90,000 sq. ft.) of public display space, featuring material from the collections of fine art and applied art, archaeology, ethnography, treasures from the Spanish Armada, local history, numismatics, industrial archaeology, botany, zoology and geology.
