Dermie F. O'Connell (April 13, 1928 – October 5, 1988) was an American professional basketball player. A 6'0" guard (basketball), guard from the College of the Holy Cross, O'Connell played two seasons (1948–1950) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Boston Celtics and St. Louis Bombers (NBA), St. Louis Bombers. He averaged 5.8 points per game in his NBA career. Cardinal Hayes High School
Cardinal Hayes High School is an American Catholic high school for boys in the Concourse Village neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City, New York. The school serves the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. It is a member of the Catholic High School Athletic Association. The building was constructed in the Art Deco style. It is named after Cardinal Patrick Joseph Hayes, a previous archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. History Cardinal Hayes was dedicated on September 8, 1941, by Archbishop Spellman. Cardinal Hayes' current rival is Mount Saint Michael Academy. The two schools' football teams have met annually since 1942 on Thanksgiving Day. In basketball, a field goal is a basket scored on any shot or tap other than a free throw, worth two or three points depending on the distance of the attempt from the basket. In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket. An assist is also credited when a basket is awarded due to defensive goaltending. There is some judgment involved in deciding whether a passer should be credited with an assist. An assist can be scored for the passer even if the player who receives the pass makes a basket after dribbling the ball for a short distance.
