Derek Morris (academic)
Sir Derek James Morris (born 23 December 1945) is former Chairman of the Competition Commission (formerly the Monopolies and Mergers Commission) and was the Provost of Oriel College, Oxford until Moira Wallace replaced him in 2013. Morris was educated at Harrow County School for Boys, studied PPE at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and then took a D.Phil. in Economics at Nuffield College, Oxford before taking up a Research Fellowship at the Centre for Business and Industrial Studies at University of Warwick. From 1970 until 1998 he was Fellow and Tutor in Economics at Oriel. This included three years on secondment as Economic Director of the National Economic Development Council. From 1984 to 1998 he was Chairman of Oxford Economic Forecasting Ltd, and is currently a Governor of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. Derek Terrence Morris (born August 24, 1978) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played over 1,100 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Phoenix Coyotes, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. He was originally drafted out of the Western Hockey League (WHL) 13th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Morris played minor hockey in the Alberta Midget Hockey League (AMHL) with the Red Deer Chiefs and was awarded the Brian Benning Trophy as the league's top defenceman in 1995. He went on to play major junior with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL). After his rookie WHL season, in which he scored 52 points in 67 games, Morris was drafted 13th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, a somewhat surprising pick as Morris had been projected to be a third- or fourth-round pick. Adonis Juvenile Novices' Hurdle
The Adonis Juvenile Novices' Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt hurdle race in United Kingdom which is open to horses aged four years. It is run at Kempton Park over a distance of about 2 miles (), and during its running there are eight hurdles to be jumped. The race is for novice hurdlers, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late February. The event serves as a principal trial for the Triumph Hurdle in March. Since 1988, six horses have won both races – Mysilv, Katarino, Snow Drop, Penzance, Soldatino and Zarkandar. Prior to 1994, the race was known as the Tote Placepot Hurdle. Derrick Morris
Derrick Morris (24 March 1930 – 30 July 2005) was, at the time of his death, Europe's longest-surviving heart transplant recipient, living 25 years after the transplant performed by Sir Magdi Yacoub in 1980. He died from an illness that was not heart or transplant related. Morris had his first heart attack in 1975 and was told to expect to live only months. He became an active campaigner against heart disease, an advocate of organ donation as well as a symbol of the success of organ transplantation. Early life and illness Derrick Morris was born on 24 March 1930. He was from Swansea in Wales, and was working as a supervisor at Swansea Docks when he suffered his first heart attack in 1975. He was given only a 15% chance of survival, and was told to "live six months at a time".
