Derek Bedson
Derek Robert Campbell Bedson, (October 21, 1920 – May 14, 1989) was a Canadian civil servant. Born in London, England, the grandson of Samuel Lawrence Bedson, he was raised in Manitoba. In 1941, he received a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Manitoba. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, after serving in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during World War II. While at Oxford, he formed a lifelong friendship with George Grant. In 1947, he joined the federal civil service. He worked two years with the Ministry of Mines and Resources before he became a Foreign Services Officer with External Affairs from 1949 to 1955. From 1953 to 1955, he was with the Canadian delegation at the United Nations. In 1955, he became the private secretary of George Drew. In 1956, Drew was replaced by John Diefenbaker and he became his private secretary as well. In 1958, Duff Roblin appointed him Clerk of the Executive Council of Manitoba. John Diefenbaker
John George Diefenbaker ( ; September 18, 1895 – August 16, 1979) was the 13th prime minister of Canada, serving from 1957 to 1963. He was the only Progressive Conservative party leader between 1930 and 1979 to lead the party to an election victory, doing so three times, although only once with a majority of the seats in the House of Commons. Diefenbaker was born in southwestern Ontario in the small town of Neustadt in 1895. In 1903, his family migrated west to the portion of the North-West Territories which would soon become the province of Saskatchewan. He grew up in the province and was interested in politics from a young age. After service in World War I, Diefenbaker became a noted criminal defence lawyer. He contested elections through the 1920s and 1930s with little success until he was finally elected to the House of Commons in 1940. Diefenbaker was repeatedly a candidate for the party leadership. Duff Roblin
Dufferin "Duff" Roblin, (June 17, 1917 – May 30, 2010) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He served as the 14th premier of Manitoba from 1958 to 1967. Roblin was appointed to the Senate of Canada on the advice of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. In the government of Brian Mulroney, he served as government leader in the Senate. He was the grandson of Sir Rodmond Roblin, who also served as Manitoba Premier. His ancestor John Roblin served in the Upper Canada assembly. Early life Roblin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Charles Dufferin Roblin and Sophie Murdoch, and was educated at the University of Manitoba and the University of Chicago. He was a car dealer before entering politics, and served as a Wing Commander in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1946.
