Derek Almstead (born August 23, 1974) is an American musician/engineer closely tied to The Elephant Six Collective. Background Born in Lexington, Virginia, he spent his childhood in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, and later Manassas, Virginia. In 1995 he moved to Athens, Georgia, where he became involved with Elephant 6. A multi-instrumentalist, Almstead also writes, records, engineers, and masters music from his own Pixel Studio. Portfolio Almstead is perhaps best known as a bass player. The Elephant Six Collective
The Elephant 6 Recording Company is a loosely defined musical collective from the United States. Notable bands associated with the collective include the Apples in Stereo, Beulah, Circulatory System, Elf Power, the Minders, Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, and the Olivia Tremor Control. Although bands in Elephant 6 explore many different genres, they have a shared interest in psychedelic pop of the 1960s, with particular influence from bands such as the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and the Zombies. Their music sometimes features intentionally low fidelity production and experimental recording techniques. The collective started in Ruston, Louisiana in the late 1980s. The name was occasionally used to denote the home recordings made by four high school friends: Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, Jeff Mangum, and Robert Schneider. The Glands
The Glands were an American indie rock band from Athens, Georgia, United States. Their first CD, ''Double Thriller'', was self-released in 1996 and reissued on Bar/None Records in 1998. Their self-titled album was first released in 2000 on Capricorn Records and reissued on Velocette Records in August 2001. Overview The Glands' unique sounds recalled a variety of influences, including the Kinks, the Who, and The Rolling Stones. The song "Livin' Was Easy" was featured in the DVD ''Let America Laugh'' by comedian David Cross. The band reunited for a brief east coast tour in late 2011, playing several dates with Yo La Tengo. Ross Shapiro, singer, guitarist, and founding member of The Glands, died in March 2016 aged 53 of lung cancer. The Olivia Tremor Control is an American psychedelic band from Athens, Georgia. The band's main line-up comprised Will Cullen Hart, Bill Doss, Eric Harris, John Fernandes, and Peter Erchick. The Olivia Tremor Control's music encompasses a wide range of styles, including indie rock, neo-psychedelia, psychedelic pop and psychedelic rock. Among the band's more prominent influences include psychedelic pop bands of the 1960s, such as the Beach Boys and the Beatles. The Olivia Tremor Control originated as a band called Cranberry Lifecycle, which was formed in Ruston, Louisiana in the late 1980s by Hart and his high school friend Jeff Mangum. The two moved to Athens, and reworked Cranberry Lifecycle songs as a new band called Synthetic Flying Machine. Elf Power
Elf Power is an American indie rock band that originated in Athens, Georgia, United States. The line-up consists of guitarist/vocalist Andrew Rieger, keyboardist Laura Carter, guitarist Dave Wrathgabar, bassist Bryan Poole, and drummer Peter Alvanos. They are part of the Elephant Six Collective. History The band began as a four-track recording project of Rieger, Carter, Raleigh Hatfield and Dave Wrathgabar, later of Fablefactory. These recording sessions eventually resulted in the first incarnation of their debut album ''Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs''. The band's line-up expanded when Rieger and Carter recruited Elephant Six musician Bryan Poole, also known as The Late B.P. Helium. Vic Chesnutt
James Victor Chesnutt (November 12, 1964 – December 25, 2009) was an American singer-songwriter from Athens, Georgia. His first album, little (album), ''Little'', was released in 1990. His commercial breakthrough came in 1996 with the release of ''Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation'', a charity record of alternative artists covering his songs. Chesnutt released 17 albums during his career, including two produced by Michael Stipe, and a 1996 release on Capitol Records, ''About to Choke''. His musical style has been described by Bryan Carroll of AllMusic as a "skewed, refracted version of Americana (music), Americana that is haunting, funny, poignant, and occasionally mystical, usually all at once". The 63 Crayons
The 63 Crayons was a psychedelic rock band affiliated with the Elephant 6 musical collective. Formed in Roanoke, Virginia, USA, band members Charlie Johnston (guitar, vocals), Suzanne Allison (keyboards, vocals) and Ben Davis (theremin and sampled sounds) moved to Athens, Georgia, in 2003, where they were joined by Derek Almstead (drums). Both their 2002 EP, ''Spread the Love'' and their 2004 full-length album, ''Good People'' were released by Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. Their last album, ''Spoils For Survivors'', was self-released. M Coast
Marshmallow Coast (formerly M Coast) is an indie pop band associated with the Elephant Six Collective. Background Marshmallow Coast began in 1996, with a self released cassette recorded by singer/songwriter Andy Gonzales, which featured contributions from Joel Richardson. Gonzales then recorded Timesquare with Julian Koster in 1997, although it was not released until 2000 due to various label disputes. Gonzales dropped the project briefly to tour with the Music Tapes, and relocated to Athens, GA in 1998. In Athens, Gonzales met Kevin Barnes and Derek Almstead. With Barnes, Gonzales recorded Marshmallow Coast's debut LP ''Seniors & Juniors'', released in 1999. Gonzales joined of Montreal that same year.
