Dereck E. Davis
Dereck Eugene Davis (born June 6, 1967) is an American politician serving as the Treasurer of Maryland since 2021. He is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates from the 25th district. Background Delegate Davis was born in Washington, D.C., on June 6, 1967. He attended Central High School, Capitol Heights, Maryland and graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in political science in 1989. He earned a master's degree in public policy in 1999. Davis has been an administrator with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission since 2004. In the legislature Davis was a member of House of Delegates from January 11, 1995 to 2021. He was the Chairman of the House Economic Matters Committee. He also chaired that committee's public utilities work group. He was a member of the Legislative Policy Committee and the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. Treasurer Of Maryland
The Treasurer of Maryland is responsible for the management and investment of the cash deposits, bond sale revenue, and all other securities and collateral of the state of Maryland in the United States. In addition, the Treasurer conducts regular briefings for the Maryland General Assembly and prepares an annual report on the status of the Treasurer's Office. The Treasurer also sits on the Maryland Board of Public Works. Since 2021, the Treasurer of Maryland has been Dereck E. Davis. From 1775 until 1843, Maryland had a separate state treasurer for both the Eastern Shore of Maryland, eastern and western shores. Maryland Electric Deregulation is the result of a bill passed in 1999 by the Maryland General Assembly. This bill changed the entire face of the Maryland utility industry. In 1999, the Maryland General Assembly, under pressure from state manufacturers, enacted legislation that would cause the electric industry in Maryland to become deregulated. This bill, the Electric Customer Choice and Competition Act of 1999, was passed through the Maryland General Assembly with many Democratic and every Republican legislator's support. The bill was signed into law by Democratic Governor Parris Glendening who was not in favor of deregulation, but was threatened with an override if he opted to veto. Prior to this legislation, the local electric utility was in charge of procuring and delivering power to the people in their service territory.
