Derasmosaurus
''Derasmosaurus'' is an extinct species of rhynchocephalian known from the Pietraroja Plattenkalk of Italy. It was originally considered to be a specimen of ''Lacerta brevicauda'' by Costa in 1866, it was later considered a specimen of the lizard '' Chometokadmon fitzingeri'' by D'Erasmo in 1915. It was described as a distinct rhynchocephalian genus in 1988. It is distinct from other indeterminate rhychocephalians found in the Plattenkalk. It is considered to be aquatically adapted, and possibly a member of the Pleurosauridae Pleurosauridae is an extinct family of sphenodontian reptiles, known from the Jurassic of Europe. The Cretaceous ( ) is a geological period that lasted from about 145 to 66 million years ago (Mya). It is the third and final period of the Mesozoic Era, as well as the longest. Pleurosauridae
Pleurosauridae is an extinct family of sphenodontian reptiles, known from the Jurassic of Europe. Members of the family had long-snake like bodies with reduced limbs that were adapted for aquatic life in marine environments. It contains two genera, ''Palaeopleurosaurus,'' which is known from the Early Jurassic (Toarcian) Posidonia Shale of Germany, as well as ''Pleurosaurus'' from the Late Jurassic of Germany and France. ''Paleopleurosaurus'' is more primitive than the later ''Pleurosaurus'', with a skull similar to those of other sphenodontians, while that of ''Pleurosaurus'' is highly modified relative to other sphendontians. Chometokadmon
''Chometokadmon'' is an extinct genus of anguimorph lizard from the Early Cretaceous of Italy. The type and only species is ''Chometokadmon fitzingeri'', named by Italian zoologist Oronzio Gabriele Costa in 1864. It is known from only one specimen, a nearly complete skeleton from the comune of Pietraroja in the Apennine Mountains from the sediments of the Pietraroia Plattenkalk. Costa identified the specimen as a lizard, but in 1915 paleontologist Geremia d'Erasmo reclassified the skeleton as that of a rhynchocephalian on the basis of another rhynchocephalian specimen Costa had described, which d'Erasmo thought belonged to the same species. Later studies of the anatomy of these two specimens revealed that they belonged to two different species; Costa's ''Chometokadmon'' was a lizard whereas the other specimen, renamed ''Derasmosaurus'' in honor of d'Erasmo, was a rhynchocephalian. Rhynchocephalia
Rhynchocephalia (; ) is an order of lizard-like reptiles that includes only one living species, the tuatara (''Sphenodon punctatus'') of New Zealand. Despite its current lack of diversity, during the Mesozoic rhynchocephalians were a diverse group including a wide array of morphologically distinct forms. The oldest record of the group is dated to the Middle Triassic around 238 to 240 million years ago, and they had achieved a worldwide distribution by the Early Jurassic. Most rhynchocephalians belong to the group Sphenodontia ('wedge-teeth'). Their closest living relatives are lizards and snakes in the order Squamata, with the two orders being grouped together in the superorder Lepidosauria. Many of the niches occupied by lizards today were held by sphenodontians during the Triassic and Jurassic, although lizard diversity began to overtake sphenodontian diversity in the Cretaceous, and they had disappeared almost entirely by the beginning of the Cenozoic.
