Deputy Minister Stakes
The Deputy Minister Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. An Ontario Sire Stakes, it is a restricted race for three-year-old horses sired by a stallion standing in the province of Ontario during the year of their birth. Run in mid July, it is contested over a distance of seven furlongs on Polytrack (dirt from 1997–2006) and currently carries a purse of $96,000 + . Inaugurated in 1997, the race was named in honour of Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Deputy Minister, a Canadian-bred colt who earned Canadian Sovereign and American Eclipse awards during his racing career and who became a very influential stallion. Woodbine Racetrack
Woodbine Racetrack is a race track for Thoroughbred horse racing in the Etobicoke area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Owned by Woodbine Entertainment Group, Woodbine Racetrack manages and hosts Canada's most famous race, the King's Plate. The track was opened in 1956 with a one-mile oval dirt track, as well as a seven-eights turf course. It has been extensively remodeled since 1993, and since 1994 has had three racecourses. History The current Woodbine carries the name originally used by a racetrack which operated in southeast Toronto, at Queen Street East and Kingston Road, from 1874 through 1993. Eurico Rosa Da Silva
Eurico Rosa da Silva (born June 29, 1975, in Buri, São Paulo, Brazil) is a retired Thoroughbred racing jockey who raced for five years in his native Brazil and another four years in Macau before coming to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. While based in Canada, he also won races in the United States. Silva got his first Canadian Triple Crown win in 2009 when he rode Eye of the Leopard to victory in the Queen's Plate, and won that race again in 2010 aboard Big Red Mike. Among his other successes, in 2016 he won the Woodbine Oaks, riding Neshama. In 2017, he won the Canadian International Stakes riding Bullards Alley. In 2019, he won the Woodbine Mile with El Tormenta. Eurico Rosa da Silva retired at the end of the 2019 racing season having won 2,286 races. Tyler Pizarro
Tyler Pizarro (born May 8, 1986 in Bolton, Ontario) is a Canadian champion jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing based at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. The son of former jockey Jorge Pizarro, his mother Donna is a trainer at Woodbine Racetrack. As a boy, Pizarro began galloping horses on a farm then by age sixteen was dedicated to following in his father's footsteps and was galloping horses on a track. Turning professional in late 2005, he earned his first win on September 2, 2006 and in 2007 won 124 races at Woodbine Racetrack, more than any other apprentice jockey. His 2007 performance earned him the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey and was a finalist for the United States' Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. Patrick Husbands
Patrick Husbands (born May 22, 1973) is a Barbadian jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. The son of a jockey, he began riding as a young boy, turning professional in his home country where he rode successfully until emigrating to Toronto, Ontario in 1994. In 1990 he became the youngest jockey to win the prestigious Barbados Gold Cup at just 16 years, 9 months on his mount Vardar. Racing out of Woodbine Racetrack, in 2003 Husbands won the Canadian Triple Crown aboard the colt Wando and that year became his breakout year. Emma-Jayne Wilson (born September 1, 1981) is a Sovereign and Eclipse Award-winning jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. She began taking riding lessons at age nine, and after finishing high school in Brampton, she studied equine management at Kemptville College, part of the University of Guelph. In 2007 aboard Mike Fox, Wilson became the first woman to win North America's oldest and Canada's most important race, the Queen's Plate. Robert Tiller
Robert P. Tiller (born December 11, 1949 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) is a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. A resident of Brampton, Ontario, he has long been one of the top trainers at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack. He has won four training titles at Woodbine Racetrack, earned three Sovereign Awards for Outstanding Trainer and was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2008. Tiller began training in 1972 and won his first race with Royal Greek Ship. He had his first starter in the Queen's Plate in 1975, finishing second with longshot Near the High Sea. Todd Kabel
Todd Kabel (December 7, 1965 – March 27, 2021) was a Canadian Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. A native of McCreary, Manitoba, he began his career as a jockey at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and in 1987 started competing at tracks in Ontario, moving to Toronto permanently in 1991. Riding from a base at Woodbine Racetrack, Todd Kabel won Canada's Sovereign Award seven times, beginning with the Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 1986 followed by Outstanding Jockey in 1992 and 1995 and during the four-year period from 2003 to 2006.
