Deputed Testamony Stakes
The Deputed Testamony Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held in February at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. It is open to Maryland-bred three-year-olds and is run at one mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt. The race was run for the 28th time in 2012. An ungraded stakes, it offers a purse of $100,000. The Deputed Testamony Stakes is also one of Maryland's Triple Crown prep races. The winner of the race typically moves on to compete in the Private Terms Stakes held in March at Laurel Park Racecourse as well, but winners have also gone to New York and Kentucky for their next races.2007 Maryland Jockey Club Media Guide, page 88 on March 3, 2007. Pimlico Race Course
Pimlico Race Course is a thoroughbred horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes. Its name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers named the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London. The racetrack is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" after a small rise in the infield that became a favorite gathering place for thoroughbred trainers and race enthusiasts. It is currently owned by the Stronach Group. History Pimlico officially opened in the October 25, 1870, with the colt Preakness winning the first running of the Dinner Party Stakes. Approximately 12,000 people attended, many taking special race trains arranged by the Northern Central Railway. Three years later the horse would have the 1873 Preakness Stakes named in his honor. Magic Weisner
Magic Weisner (foaled in Maryland on May 3, 1999) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A descendant of Bold Forbes, he was sired by Ameri Valay and bred by Nancy H. Alberts. Magic Weisner was a graded stakes winner but is best remembered for his runner-up finish in the 2002 Preakness Stakes and his serious public battle to overcome West Nile fever when little was known about the disease. Two-year-old season Nancy Alberts, also Magic Weisner's owner, trainer, and exercise rider, bred the horse from a mare named Jazema, which she bought as a yearling for $1 because of her crooked legs. In the late 1980s, Alberts lost Jazema twice in claiming races and bought her back both times. The final time she bought her back was for breeding. Alberts had commented that Jazema had a special eye for Ameri Valay because of seeing him around the barn area at Laurel Park.
