Deposition From The Cross, Volterra (Rosso Fiorentino)
The ''Deposition from the Cross'' is an altarpiece, completed in 1521, depicting the Deposition of Christ by the Italian Renaissance painter Rosso Fiorentino. The painting is dated and signed: RUBEUS FLOR. A.S. MDXXI. It is broadly considered to be the artist's masterpiece. Painted in oil on wood, the painting was previously located in the Duomo of Volterra, but has been moved to the town art gallery, Pinacoteca Comunale. Interpretation This painting has often been compared to the fellow Mannerist painter Pontormo's near contemporary (1528) treatment of the same subject in his Deposition canvas in Florence. Unlike Pontormo's bright coloration and unitary collection of billowing figures, the Fiorentino depiction has two arenas: above is an Escher-like geometric struggle of laborers on ladders, removing the crucified Christ, while below, the women and men are subsumed in grief. Giovanni Battista di Jacopo (8 March 1495 in Gregorian style, or 1494 according to the calculation of times in Florence where the year began on 25 March – 14 November 1540), known as Rosso Fiorentino (meaning "Red Florentine" in Italian), or Il Rosso, was an Italian Mannerist painter who worked in oil and fresco and belonged to the Florentine school. Biography Born in Florence with the red hair that gave him his nickname, Rosso first trained in the studio of Andrea del Sarto alongside his contemporary, Pontormo. San Lorenzo, Sansepolcro
San Lorenzo is a Renaissance-style, Roman Catholic church located on Via Santa Croce 2 corner with Via Luca Pacioli, in Sansepolcro, province of Arezzo, region of Tuscany, Italy. The church is known for its Rosso Fiorentino masterpiece depicting the '' Deposition''. History A Benedictine order church of this name was founded outside the city walls in 1350, but the present church, with its arcaded portico, was built in 1556. It was originally affiliated with the Confraternity of Santa Croce. The church was suppressed in the 19th century, and for many years used as a part of an orphanage, where the children learned how to weave textiles. The main altar has the Rosso Fiorentino altarpiece. Sansepolcro, formerly Borgo Santo Sepolcro, is a town and ''comune'' founded in the 11th century, located in the Italian Province of Arezzo in the eastern part of the region of Tuscany. The ''Sansepolcro Deposition'' or ''Sansepolcro Lamentation'' is a 1528 oil on canvas painting by Rosso Fiorentino, now in San Lorenzo church in Sansepolcro. It was commissioned in 23 September 1527 by the Confraternity of the Holy Cross (hence its subject) for its altar in Santa Croce church in Sansepolcro. Robert Suckale (30 October 1943 – 13 February 2020) was a German art historian, medievalist and professor at the Technical University of Berlin. Life Suckale was born in Königsberg. Suckale completed his studies in art history with the subsidiary subjects classical archaeology and Latin philology of the Middle Ages in Berlin, Bonn, Paris and Munich in 1970 with a doctorate under at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He then worked at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich and from 1971 was a research assistant to Braunfels at the Institut für Kunstgeschichte dof the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.
