Department Of Economic Development (Isle Of Man)
The Department for Enterprise (''Rheynn Gastid Dellal'') is one of eight departments of the Isle of Man Government. It was created on 1 April 2010 as the Department for Economic Development, largely replacing the former Department of Trade and Industry as well as taking on the tourism function from the former Department of Tourism and Leisure and several other functions from the Isle of Man Treasury and the former Department of Education. The department was renamed as the Department for Enterprise in November 2017 under Statutory Document No. 2017/0325. The current (in 2022) Minister for Enterprise is Lawrie Hooper MHK. The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (''Rheynn Ynsee Spoyrt as Cultoor'') is a department of the Isle of Man Government. The department was formerly the Department of Education and Children and was renamed as the Department of Education, Sport and Culture under Statutory Document No. 2017/0325 with effect from November 2017. Douglas ( gv, Doolish, ) is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man, with a population of 26,677 (2021). It is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of . The River Douglas forms part of the town's harbour and main commercial port. Douglas was a small settlement until it grew rapidly as a result of links with the English port of Liverpool in the 18th century. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). Alfred Cannan
Alfred Louis Cannan MHK is an independent Member of the House of Keys for Ayre & Michael and is the current Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. He was previously the Minister for the Treasury. Cannan sought the position of Chief Minister in 2011, but was unsuccessful. His nomination was the first ever in which only MHKs had a vote: previously the members of the Legislative Council also took part in the election. Cannan replaced Howard Quayle, who was stepping down from his position and declined to run in the 2021 House of Keys election. Alex Allinson
Alexander John Allinson (born 1966) is an English-born Manx physician and politician who serves as an independent member of the House of Keys, representing Ramsey since 2016. Allinson serves on the Council of Ministers as the current Minister for the Treasury, having been appointed to the role in May 2022 by Alfred Cannan, the chief minister of the Isle of Man. Early life, education, and medical career Allinson was born in London in 1966. He attended from the Latymer Upper School, and studied medicine at King's College, Cambridge, graduating with a masters degree in 1991.
