The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation is a department of the Government of Western Australia. The department was formed on 1 July 2017, out of the former Department of State Development, the industry promotion and innovation functions of the Department of Commerce and the Western Australian Tourism Commission. A restructuring of the Western Australian government departments was part of Mark McGowan's election campaign and, in the month after taking office, the number of government departments was reduced from 41 to 25. The department is responsible for the portfolios of economic development, international trade and investment, tourism as well as the promotion of the defence, international education, science and innovation sectors. In May 2021, the department was one of eight Western Australian Government departments to receive a new Director General with Rebecca Brown being appointed to the role effective from 31 May 2021. The Department of Commerce was a department of the Government of Western Australia. It was formed on 1 January 2009 from the former Department of Consumer and Employment Protection and the Science and Innovation division of the former Department of Industry and Resources, with the functions of the Resources Safety division being transferred to the newly formed Department of Mines and Petroleum. Mark McGowan (born 13 July 1967) is an Australian politician, the 30th premier of Western Australia, and the leader of the Western Australian branch of the Labor Party. McGowan was born and raised in Newcastle, New South Wales. He attended the University of Queensland and worked as a legal officer for the Royal Australian Navy, serving at naval base , south of Perth. Settling in Western Australia, he was elected as a councillor for the City of Rockingham from 1994, and was later elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly at the 1996 Western Australian state election, 1996 election, representing the district of Electoral district of Rockingham, Rockingham.
