The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (''Rheynn Ynsee Spoyrt as Cultoor'') is a department of the Isle of Man Government. The department was formerly the Department of Education and Children and was renamed as the Department of Education, Sport and Culture under Statutory Document No. 2017/0325 with effect from November 2017. The current Minister (since 2021) is Julie Edge. History The Department of Education was renamed during the Government shake up of April 2010 as Department of Education and Children. The ''Board of Education for the Isle of Man'' was established as a Board of Tynwald in 1872, and renamed the ''Council of Education'' in 1899. It was reconstituted and renamed the ''Isle of Man Board of Education'' in 1946. Its function was to oversee and provide funds to the elected local school boards, and after 1920 to the popularly elected ''Isle of Man Central Education Authority'' which replaced them. Steve Rodan
Stephen Charles Rodan MLC (born 19 April 1954) is a Manx politician who served as the President of Tynwald from 2016 to 2021 and is a former Minister of the Isle of Man Government and former MHK for the constituency of Garff. He was first elected to the seat in a by-election in 1995. He has been Isle of Man County Chairman of the Royal British Legion since 2012. Early life and career Born on 19 April 1954 in Glasgow to Robert W. Rodan and Betty Rodan (née Turner), he is a qualified pharmacist. Rodan was educated at the High School of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh, before graduating from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, with a BSc (Hons) in pharmacy. After graduating, in 1978, Rodan began practising as a pharmacist in Elgin, Morayshire. In 1980, he moved to Bermuda and worked as a pharmacy manager until moving to the Isle of Man. Education In The Isle Of Man
Education in the Isle of Man is compulsory for children aged between 5 and 16. As a Crown dependency the Isle of Man parliament and government have competence over all domestic matters, including education; however the structure and curriculum are broadly in line with that of UK schools and particularly the English national curriculum. Education is overseen by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture and regulated by the Isle of Man Education Act 2001. As of September 2017 there were 6,492 pupils in primary schools, and 5,218 pupils in secondary education. History Before 1675 there were no schools in the Isle of Man and any education was provided by the church. Victor Kneale
George Victor Harris Kneale (born 12 January 1918, died 8 April 2007) was a Manx politician and former Speaker of the House of Keys and Education Minister. Victor Kneale was elected MHK for Douglas West in 1962. He was Chairman of the Board of Education for 15 years, having been a non political member of the Board from 1951 until his election in 1962. He was then elevated to the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man in 1974 before resigning his seat to contest the 1981 General Election. He resigned because of his belief the Legislative Council members should be publicly elected. This was an issue he was still pursuing until a short time before his death having recently submitted his own system for such elections to the Council of Ministers for consideration. He won his old seat back and became Minister of Education until 1990 when he was elected Speaker of the House of Keys. He retired at the 1991 General Election. Ron Cretney
Louis Ronald Cretney was a former Minister in the Isle of Man Government. Ron Cretney was born in Douglas and educated in Hanover Street School and Douglas High School before leaving the Island to train as a teacher at the Chester Diocesan Training College. He served in the Royal Artillery from 1942 to 1946 and saw duty in both India and Burma. On coming back from army service Ron returned to the classroom and following a few years teaching on the Wirral came back to the Isle of Man to teach in Rushen, Ballaugh, Willaston and Onchan primary schools, retiring as a headmaster. Ron was elected to Onchan Village Commissioners in 1977, serving as their chairman in 1983. The Legislative Council ( gv, Yn Choonceil Slattyssagh) is the upper chamber of Tynwald, the legislature of the Isle of Man. The abbreviation "LegCo" is often used. Noel Cringle
Noel Quayle Cringle Order of the British Empire, OBE (16 December 1937 – 28 August 2021) was President of Tynwald, the legislature of the Isle of Man, from 2000 to 2011. Cringle was born and raised in Ballabeg, educated at Castle Rushen High School and became a farmer and later an auctioneer (Central Marts Limited). Married to Mary, with two sons. He was an Arbory Parish Commissioner from 1964 to 1974. He was first elected a House of Keys, Member of the House of Keys in 1974 as a member for Rushen (constituency), Rushen. He lost his seat in 1986, whilst Chairman of the Home Affairs Board, but regained it in 1991, continuing as a Member for Rushen until 2000. From 1996 to 2000 he was Speaker of the House of Keys. Lieutenant Colonel Dr Edgar John Mann MB (24 June 1926 – 21 June 2013) was a British politician, and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Isle of Man, the then head of the island's Government. Early life and career Born on 24 June 1926 in London, he was educated at the Friern Barnet Grammar School and King's College London. He went on to become a Medical Officer, a general practitioner and a lieutenant colonel in the RAMC, commanding field ambulances in the Territorial Army. Upon moving to the Isle of Man, he became a village commissioner (similar to a parish councillor) at Laxey in 1974, before standing for the House of Keys for Garff in 1976. He was immediately appointed Chairman of various government Boards (forerunners to the Departments).
