Denver Avalanche
The Denver Avalanche were an American soccer team based out of Denver, Colorado that played in the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1980 to 1982. Their home arena was McNichols Sports Arena. History In February 1980, the Major Indoor Soccer League awarded a franchise to Ron Maierhofer, to be named the Denver Avalanche. The team's first three players, all signed the same day were Tony Graham, Chris Cattaneo and Adrian Brooks. The team's first draft pick Erhardt Kapp passed on the Avalanche and signed with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League instead. The team's first game, an exhibition match, took place on November 3, 1980, a 10–4 loss to the St. Louis Steamers. Coached by Dave Clements, the Avalanche finished the regular season out of playoff contention, but in 1982, they made the playoffs only to fall to the St. Louis Steamers in the first round. McNichols Sports Arena
McNichols Sports Arena was an indoor arena located in Denver, Colorado. Located adjacent to Mile High Stadium and completed in 1975, at a cost of $16 million, it seated 16,061 for hockey games and 17,171 for basketball games. Sports use It was named after Denver mayor William H. McNichols Jr., who served from 1968 to 1983. A small-scale scandal surrounded the naming because McNichols was in office at the time. 27 luxury suites were installed as part of a 1986 renovation. The renovation also saw the original Stewart-Warner end-zone scoreboards, which each had color matrix screens, upgraded by White Way Sign with new digits and to include new color video screens. George Best (22 May 1946 – 25 November 2005) was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger, spending most of his club career at Manchester United. Peter Duerden
Peter Duerden (born 5 June 1945) is a former professional association footballer who played as a defender in the North American Soccer League and the Major Indoor Soccer League. He also served as an assistant coach with teams in both leagues. Club career Duerden was born in Burnley, England. In 1964, he moved to Canada where he signed with the Toronto Metros of the North American Soccer League. He began the 1972 season with Toronto before moving to the Montreal Olympique during the season. In late 1973, he played in the National Soccer League with Toronto First Portuguese. The Tacoma Stars were an American professional indoor soccer team that played in the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1983 to 1992. They played at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. The team was established in 1983 from the defunct Denver Avalanche. The Stars hold the record for the largest crowd to witness an indoor soccer game—21,728 people—from game 7 of the 1987 MISL Championship, which they lost to the Dallas Sidekicks in overtime. North American Soccer League (1968–1984)
The North American Soccer League (NASL) was the top-level major professional soccer league in the United States and Canada that operated from 1968 to 1984. It was the first soccer league to be successful on a national scale in the United States. The league final was called the Soccer Bowl from 1975 to 1983 and the Soccer Bowl Series in its final year, 1984. The league was headed by Commissioner Phil Woosnam from 1969 to 1983.
