Malocclusion
In orthodontics, a malocclusion is a misalignment or incorrect relation between the teeth of the upper and lower dental arches when they approach each other as the jaws close. The English-language term dates from 1864; Edward Angle (1855-1930), the "father of modern orthodontics", popularised it. The word "malocclusion" derives from ''occlusion'', and refers to the manner in which opposing teeth meet ('' mal-'' + ''occlusion'' = "incorrect closure"). The malocclusion classification is based on the relationship of the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar and the buccal groove of the mandibular first molar.  If this molar relationship exists, then the teeth can align into normal occlusion. According to Angle, malocclusion is any deviation of the occlusion from the ideal. However, assessment for malocclusion should also take into account aesthetics and the impact on functionality. Pont's Analysis
Pont's Analysis is an analysis developed by Pont in 1909. This analysis allows one to predict the width of the maxillary arch at the premolar and molar region by measure the mesio-distal widths of the four permanent incisors. The analysis helps to determine if the dental arch is narrow or normal and if expansion is possible or not. The width from Left Premolar to Right Premolar or ''Measured Premolar Value (MPV)'' can be calculated by using Sum of Incisal Widths (S.I) of incisors and multiplying it by 100. The result can be divided by 80. The width from Left Molar to Right Molar or ''Measured Molar Value (MMV)'' can be calculated by using the S.I of incisors and multiplying by 100. The result is divided by 64. The widths are measured from occlusal grooves of both premolars and molars. Disadvantages One of the drawbacks of this analysis is that the analysis was initially done on French Population by Pont. Therefore, the data cannot be used to make predictions for other popula ...

Bolton Analysis
Bolton Analysis is a tooth analysis developed by Wayne A. Bolton to determine the discrepancy between size of maxillary and mandibular teeth. This analysis helps to determine the optimum interarch relationship. This analysis measures the Mesio-distal width of each tooth and is divided into two analyses. History Wayne A Bolton presented this analysis in the year 1958. In 1962, he published another paper which talked about clinical applications of using Bolton Analysis in Orthodontics. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis dental school in 1950. A boley gauge is usually the instrument of choice to measure the widths of each teeth. However, in 1995, Shellhart et al. showed during their study that Vernier caliper can also be used as an alternative for Bolton Analysis. Many other investigation models have been developed, such as measurement from photocopies and traveling microscope but the studies have produced no results. Tanaka and Johnston analysis is a mixed dentition analysis which allows one to estimate the space available in an arch for the permanent teeth to erupt. This analysis was developed by Marvin M. Tanaka and Lysle E. Johnston in 1974 after they conducted a study on 506 orthodontic patients done in Cleveland at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. Little's Irregularity Index
Little's Irregularity Index is an index used in the field of Orthodontics to measure the crowding of Mandibular anterior arch. The index was first proposed by Robert M. Little in 1975 in his paper ''The Irregularity Index: A quantitative score of mandibular anterior alignment''. The index takes the anatomical contact points of anterior Incisors into account. A contact point is created by touching of edges of two different teeth. During mandibular crowding, teeth are often rotated, displaced either palatally or buccally. The Little's irregularity index measures the horizontal linear displacement of anatomic contact points of each mandibular incisor from the adjacent anatomic point and sums the five displacement together. Once summed, the value represents the degree of anterior irregularity. A perfect alignment from canine to canine will yield a score of 0 on the Irregularity Index.
