General Dental Council
The General Dental Council (GDC) is an organisation which regulates dental professionals in the United Kingdom. It keeps an up-to-date register of all qualified dentists and other dental care professionals such as: dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental nurses, dental technicians and clinical dental technicians. It was established in 1956 to set and maintain standards in UK dentistry, with the aims of protecting the general public from unqualified dental professionals. Its headquarters are in Wimpole Street, Marylebone, London. The General Dental Council has also stated that it aims to promote confidence in dental professionals and to be at the forefront of health care regulation. Originally they were limited in number by the Dentists Act 1984, but their status has changed following the 2005 Amendment to the Act. An Order to amend the Dentists Act (1984) was made in July 2005 which removed key restrictions on Dental Bodies Corporate (DBCs). Prior to these changes 28 DBCs existed and they formed the General Dental Council The General Dental Council (GDC) is an organisation which regulates dental professionals in the United Kingdom. It keeps an up-to-date register of all qualified dentists and other dental care professionals such as: dental hygienists, dental thera ...’s list of DBCs. This list is now defunct. Dentists in the UK may undertake work under the National Health Service or privately. They may opt for either of these alternatives, or both. A small number of dentists are employed by the NHS but the vast majority are in private practice. UK dentists are regulated by the General Dental Council and the Care Quality Commission. Payment systems Dentists who work for the NHS are paid by Units of Dentistry Activity, which are bands of treatment. This system was established in England and Wales in 2006. Before that payment was for activity, which encouraged treatment but did not incentivise preventative work. England NHS England began procurement for 363 orthodontics contracts in 2017. In December 2019 the British Dental Association and the Association of Dental Groups asked for the contracting process to be stopped. Some had already been abandoned.
