Dennis Ireland (born 19 November 1954) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from New Zealand. He had his best season in 1979 when he won the 500cc Belgian Grand Prix and finished the year in 14th place in the 500cc world championship. The 1979 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was the 31st F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Season summary A season of changing fortunes in the 500cc class saw American, Kenny Roberts capture his second crown in the face of the Suzuki-mounted opposition. In the 50cc class, Eugenio Lazzarini won every race in which he finished to take the championship. Angel Nieto dominated on a Minarelli to take his seventh world championship. Kork Ballington would repeat as double world champion in the 250cc and 350cc classes for Kawasaki. The 1983 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was the 35th F.I.M. Road racing World Championship season. Season summary The 1983 battle for 500 cc supremacy between Honda's Freddie Spencer and Yamaha's Kenny Roberts would be one of the most dramatic seasons since the 1967 duel between Giacomo Agostini and Mike Hailwood. As was the case in 1967, the battle for the 500 cc crown would pit a former world champion riding a powerful but, ill-handling four cylinder motorcycle against a young upstart riding a less powerful but better handling three cylinder motorcycle. 1979 Belgian Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1979 Belgian motorcycle Grand Prix was the eighth round of the 1979 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 29–1 July 1979 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Controversy This race was notorious because the circuit of Spa had gotten a new layer of asphalt after the circuit's original length was reduced from 14.1 to 7 Kilometers. Because it was only finished two days before the start of the first free practices, there were a lot problems. The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, FIM had approved the new venue five weeks before the start of the grand prix, but when Kenny Roberts made a promotional visit to the track four weeks before the start of the race, he noted that the road surface did not have a top layer of asphalt and that no guard rails were placed yet. 1983 British Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1983 British motorcycle Grand Prix was the tenth round of the 1983 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 29–31 July 1983 at the Silverstone Circuit. The race was split into two races. Entering Stowe Corner on Lap 5, Norman Brown's Suzuki slowed with a mechanical problem. The motorcycle stayed to the inside, but was hit by Peter Huber's Suzuki. It was not until the end of Lap 5 that riders began to enter pit lane, as only a yellow and an oil flag was displayed, but not fully across the track. On Lap 6, officials ended up waving the red flag at the starting line. Brown died instantly, while Huber was rushed by helicopter to a hospital in Oxford, where he was pronounced dead. The race restarted as a split race. The first five completed laps were scored, and the remaining 23 laps were completed shortly after the track was cleared.
