Dennis H. Osborne
Dennis Henry Osborne HRUA (23 December 1919 – 10 May 2016) was a British artist and teacher who worked mainly in oil and watercolour. Osborne exhibited widely in Canada, Ireland and the UK. He was a follower of the Euston Road School and the Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. He was a Honorary Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts. Early life Dennis Henry Osborne was born in Portsmouth on 23 December 1919. Osborne was the fourth of five children and the son of a naval submariner whom had served in two World Wars, Ernest Edward Osborne, and his wife Ada Annie Lacey. He received a general education at the Kingsbury School in Middlesex before serving an apprenticeship with the London printers William Clowes & Sons Ltd. Osborne joined the Territorial Army at the age of twenty serving as a lorry driver for the Royal Artillery in France during World War Two. William Coldstream
Sir William Menzies Coldstream, CBE (28 February 1908 – 18 February 1987) was an English realist painter and a long-standing art teacher. Biography Coldstream was born at Belford, Northumberland, in northern England, the second son of country doctor George Probyn Coldstream and his wife (Susan Jane) Lilian, daughter of Maj. Robert Mercer-Tod, of the 43rd Regiment. His mother's family were Scottish landed gentry. He grew up in London, where he was privately educated, then studied at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1926 and 1929. In 1931 he joined the London Artists' Association and then, two years later, the London Group. In 1934, Coldstream joined the GPO Film Unit to make documentary films with John Grierson. During his time with the GPO, Coldstream worked alongside W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten and Barnett Freedman but also continued to paint. Walter Hickling
Walter Robert Hickling (1 March 1924 – 27 June 2011) was a Canadian artist, poet, composer and educator. Hickling was a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, an active member of local and regional art clubs, and a founding member of Hamilton Artists Inc. Early life Walter Robert Hickling was born in Delhi, Ontario in 1924, to Samuel and Pearl Hickling. He studied at the University of Ontario College of Art under Carl Schaeffer, George Pepper, John Alfsen, William Ogilvie and Jock MacDonald graduating with a first class honours in drawing and painting in 1949. Initially after graduating Hickling concentrated his efforts on writing and composing music. In the early 1950s Hickling spent some time travelling and studying in France and Spain which influenced his colour palette and loosened his brushstrokes as he developed a figurative abstract style. Canadian Society Of Painters In Water Colour
The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (in French: La Société Canadienne de Peintres en Aquarelle), founded in 1925 is considered to be Canada's official national watercolour Society. Since the 1980s the Society has enjoyed Vice-regal Patronage from the incumbent Governor-General of Canada. Recognized by a long list of international exhibitions it is the Canadian equivalent of such other national societies as the American Watercolor Society of the United States, the Royal Watercolour Society of the United Kingdom, etc. The nation's oldest medium-specific arts organization has had an illustrious history. Ontario Society Of Artists
The Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) was founded in 1872. It is Canada's oldest continuously operating professional art society. When it was founded at the home of John Arthur Fraser, seven artists were present. Besides Fraser himself, Marmaduke Matthews, and Thomas Mower Martin were there, among others. Charlotte Schreiber was the first woman member in 1876 and showed work in the Society's Annual show of that year. The list of objectives drawn up by the founding executive included the "fostering of Original Art in the province, the holding of Annual Exhibitions, the formation of an Art Library and Museum and School of Art". The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) is an art museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Its permanent collection includes over 24,000 works from Canadian, Indigenous Canadian, and international artists. New English Art Club
The New English Art Club (NEAC) was founded in London in 1885 as an alternative venue to the Royal Academy. It continues to hold an annual exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Mall Galleries in London, exhibiting works by both members and artists from Britain and abroad whose work has been selected from an annual open submission. History Young English artists returning from studying art in Paris mounted the first exhibition of the New English Art Club in April 1886. Among them were William Laidlay, Thomas Cooper Gotch, Frank Bramley, John Singer Sargent, Philip Wilson Steer, George Clausen and Stanhope Forbes. Another founding member was G. P. Jacomb-Hood. New Contemporaries
New Contemporaries is an organisation in the UK that works to support emerging artists at the beginning of their careers by introducing them to the visual arts sector and to the public through a variety of platforms, including an annual exhibition. Artists, whether still studying or having recently graduated, are given opportunities to make contacts and gain professional experience outside of their educational institutions. For the annual exhibition, artists are invited to submit a portfolio of work, from which a selection is made by a panel of judges. The selection is made by artists and writers, and often the selector will have previously been exhibited in a New Contemporaries show.
