Dennis Dennehy (Irish Communist)
Dennis Dennehy (1938–1984) was an Irish political activist. He was a founding member of both the Irish Communist Organisation and the Dublin Housing Action Committee. Life Dennis Dennehy was born in Ireland in 1938 and was a native of Bushmount, Ballyduff, County Kerry. He emigrated to London, and became active in CND and amongst Communist groups there with other Irish emigrants. Following the 1965 split in the Communist group, he sided with the Maoist wing which became the Irish Communist Organisation (later the British & Irish Communist Organisation). Returning to Ireland in the mid sixties he served as secretary of the Dublin Housing Action Committee, and was arrested for squatting at 20 Mountjoy Square. During his time in prison he went on hunger strike in January 1969. Irish Communist Organisation
The British and Irish Communist Organisation (B&ICO) was a small group based in London, Belfast, Cork, and Dublin. Its leader was Brendan Clifford. The group produced a number of pamphlets and regular publications, including ''The Irish Communist'' and ''Workers Weekly'' in Belfast. Τhe group currently expresses itself through Athol Books with its premier publication being the '' Irish Political Review''. The group also continues to publish ''Church & State'', ''Irish Foreign Affairs'', ''Labour Affairs'' and ''Problems.'' Dublin Housing Action Committee
The Dublin Housing Action Committee (DHAC) was a 1960s protest group formed in response to housing shortages in Dublin, Ireland's capital city. It quickly moved to direct action and successfully squatted buildings to oppose redevelopment plans. Formation The group arose in response to a serious shortage of affordable housing, in a time when a large number of properties standing empty. In some cases inner city tenements collapsed, leading to deaths. There were 18,000 individuals on Dublin Corporation's housing list, with activists claiming the real total was much higher. Further, unscrupulous landlords and speculators were plentiful. It also functioned as a way for a broad range of left-wing actors in the Republic of Ireland to address themselves to a wider audience. Ballyduff, County Kerry
Ballyduff () is a village near Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland. Located on the R551 road between Ballyheigue and Ballybunion on hills above Cashen Bay where the River Feale flows to the sea at the mouth of the River Shannon. History Near Ballyduff at Rattoo, a round tower reaches a height of 29.56m, with a base circumference of 15m. This is the only complete round tower in Kerry, and has been dated to the late 11th century. In the mid-19th century, the tower sat on a raised earth causeway in what was then a swamp. The swamp was drained and the causeway removed in the late 19th century so the fields could be cultivated. On 1 November 1920, in reprisals for the killings and shootings of various RIC constables in the area, the Black and Tans shot a local man (John Houlihan) dead, burned the local creamery to the ground, and then burned seven homes in the Abbeydorney area. Squatting
Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building, usually residential, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use. The United Nations estimated in 2003 that there were one billion slum residents and squatters globally. Squatting occurs worldwide and tends to occur when people who are poor and homeless find empty buildings or land to occupy for housing. It has a long history, broken down by country below. In developing countries and least developed countries, shanty towns often begin as squatted settlements. In African cities such as Lagos much of the population lives in slums. ITGWU
The Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU), was a trade union representing workers, initially mainly labourers, in Ireland. History The union was founded by James Larkin in January 1909 as a general union. Initially drawing its membership from branches of the Liverpool-based National Union of Dock Labourers, from which Larkin had been expelled, it grew to include workers in a range of industries. The ITGWU logo was the Red Hand of Ulster, which is synonymous with ancient Gaelic Ulster. The ITGWU was at the centre of the syndicalist-inspired Dublin Lockout in 1913, the events of which left a lasting impression on the union and hence on the Irish Labour Movement. After Larkin's departure for the United States in 1914 in the wake of the Lockout, James Connolly led the ITGWU until his execution in 1916 in the wake of the Easter Rising.
