Dennis Bell (basketball)
Dennis R. Bell (born June 2, 1951) is an American former professional basketball player. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he played collegiately for Drake University. He was selected by the New York Knicks in the 5th round (83rd pick overall) of the 1973 NBA draft. He played for the Knicks (1973–76) in the NBA for 63 games. Bell is the president of Recreational Debut, a non-profit housing organization he started in 1984. It is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan where it has assists low and moderate income families purchase homes. Recreational Debut has assisted families in Florida, Michigan, Arizona and Ohio. Recreational Debut is also helps high school student athletes obtain athletic scholarships to colleges around the United States. Dennis Bell (29 August 1948 - 14 March 1995) was an American journalist, best known for his award-winning series of the articles on famine in Ethiopia in 1984 for ''Newsday''. Biography Dennis Bell was born in Muskegon, Michigan to Ezra Douglas and Natalie VanArsdale Bell. After enlisting in the United States Army in 1968, he attended the University of Michigan for his post-secondary education in 1970. The same year Bell relocated to New York, where he attended Hofstra University for free because he worked as a school custodian. In addition, he joined the summer program for minority journalists at the Institute for Journalism Education at the University of California in Berkeley. After joining Newsday’s team in 1972, he held different positions including porter clerk and pressroom reporter while finally getting foreign assignments. Dennis Bell (December 28, 1866 – September 25, 1953) was a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Army and a recipient of America's highest military decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Spanish–American War. Bell and three of his fellow Buffalo Soldiers were the last black servicemen to be presented the Medal of Honor for more than half a century. Military service Bell was born December 28, 1866, and joined the Army from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in December 1892. By June 30, 1898, he was serving as a Private in Troop H of the 10th Cavalry Regiment. On that day, American forces aboard th''Florida''near Trinidad, Cuba, dispatched a landing party to provide reconnaissance on Spanish outposts in the area. The party was discovered by Spanish scouts and came under heavy fire; their boats were sunk by enemy cannon fire, leaving them stranded on shore.
