Swimming At The 2008 Summer Olympics
The swimming competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place from 9 to 17 August 2008 at the Beijing National Aquatics Centre. The newly introduced open water marathon events (10 km) were held on 20 and 21 August 2008 at Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. Swimming featured 34 events (17 male, 17 female), including two 10 km open-water marathons. The remaining 32 were contested in a 50 m long course pool within the Olympic Park. The United States claimed a total of 31 medals (12 golds, 9 silver, and 10 bronze) in the leaderboard to maintain its standings as the most successful nation in swimming. A stellar performance in the pool also made an Olympic history for Michael Phelps, who captured eight gold medals to break Mark Spitz's 1972 record, a total of seven, at a single Games. Equestrian At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Equestrian competitions at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics were held from 9 August to 21 August at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and Sheung Yue River in Hong Kong. It was the second time that the equestrian events were hosted by a member of the IOC other than the member hosting the main games (although this time the events were technically held in the same country as the main games). Unlike 1956, however, the equestrian events were part of the main games, and were held within the same period. Anne van Olst (born 25 March 1962 in Aalborg, Nordjylland), also known as Anne Koch Jensen, is a Danish dressage rider. She was part of the Bronze winning Danish team at the Olympic games in Beijing 2008 and finished 23rd in the individual dressage at the 2012 Summer Olympics, riding Clearwater. In 1991 Anne married to the Dutch breeder and horse dealer Gert-Jan van Olst and moved to The Netherlands. Together they run a sport and breeding stable in Den Hout, Netherlands. Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (Nathalie Xenia Margrethe Benedikte; born 2 May 1975) is a Danish equestrian, an Olympian and a daughter of Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. She is the niece of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Constantine II of Greece. A member of the Danish dressage team, she won bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and also participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics. She has been the coach of the Danish national dressage team since 2017. Canoeing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's K-2 1000 Metres
The men's K-2 1000 metres competition in canoeing at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing between August 18 and 22. The K-2 event is raced in two-person kayaks. Competition consists of three rounds: the heats, the semifinals, and the final. All boats compete in the heats. The top 3 in each of the two heats advances directly to the final, while the next four finishers (places 4 through 7) in each heat move on to the semifinals. René Holten Poulsen (born 28 November 1988) is a Danish sprint canoeist, who has won medals at the Olympics, World Championships and European Championships. He won a silver medal in the men's K-2 1000 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He made his international debut in 2005, having begun paddling at the age of 12. The Dane has won medals in various sprint events, but has primarily focused on the K-1 since 2009. He has won 5 world championships medals and was crowned double world champion in 2015 in Milan, winning both the K-1 1.000 meter and K-1 500 meter, only the sixth time this double has been won. The men's team pursuit at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place between August 17 and 18, at the Laoshan Velodrome. Qualification Great Britain automatically qualified a team because of their victory at the 2008 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. They also won the late 2007 World Cup event in Sydney, affording another place based on UCI rankings. This extra place was given to Colombia. No B World Championship was held in this event. Competition format The men's team pursuit race consists of a 4 km race between two teams of four cyclists, starting on opposite sides of the track. If one team catches the other, the race is over.
