Denman Glacier
Denman Glacier is a glacier wide, descending north some , which debouches into the Shackleton Ice Shelf east of David Island, Queen Mary Land. It was discovered in November 1912 by the Western Base party of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Sir Douglas Mawson. Mawson named the glacier for Lord Denman, Governor-General of Australia in 1911, a patron of the expedition. The canyon under Denman Glacier has been found by ''BedMachine Antarctica'' project (under the leadership of the University of California, Irvine) to be the deepest natural location on land (or at least not under liquid water) worldwide, with the bedrock being below sea level. Calving of Denman Glacier into the Mawson Sea gives rise to the periodically appearing Pobeda Ice Island. Denman Shire was a local government area in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Denman Shire was proclaimed (as Wybong Shire) on 7 March 1906, one of 134 shires created after the passing of the ''Local Government (Shires) Act 1905''. It was renamed Muswellbrook Shire on 6 March 1907. It was not until 10 April 1968 that the area was renamed Denman Shire. The shire office was in Muswellbrook. Other towns and villages in the shire included Denman and Sandy Hollow. Denman is a small town in New South Wales, Australia, in Muswellbrook Shire. It is on the Golden Highway in the Upper Hunter Region, about north of Sydney. At the 2016 census, Denman had a population of 1,789. Description Denman is situated on the Hunter River near the Wollemi National Park. Denman Island, or Sla-dai-aich (Taystayic), its Indigenous name, is one of the Northern Gulf Islands and part of the Comox Valley Regional District of British Columbia, Canada. It is a member of the Islands Trust group of islands and is home to a small community of 1391 year-round residents. History Denman Island was first inhabited by Indigenous peoples including the Pentlatch and Sliammon as evidenced by middens, gravesites, and oral history. The site most recently occupied by Pentlatch people was previously named Village Point but is now called Denman Point. That village was occupied until the 1862 smallpox epidemic severely reduced its population and the survivors moved to join the K'ómoks people in nearby Comox. The Denman Wildlife Area (originally the Rogue Valley Game Management Area) is a wildlife management area near Eagle Point, Oregon, in the United States. It was named in honor of Kenneth Denman, an attorney from nearby Medford, Oregon, who lobbied for the creation of the area in 1954. The area is adjacent to TouVelle State Recreation Site and the Upper and Lower Table Rock lava formations. History Kenneth George Denman was born in Corvallis, Oregon in 1904. His father, George Washington Denman, was superintendent of Benton County schools and began practicing law soon after the birth of his son. Kenneth's mother, Minnie Hodes, died when he was 17 years old and beginning to practice law himself. Denman married a French teacher from Salem in 1930 named Margaret Bolt. Denman Fink (1880–1956) was an American artist and magazine illustrator. Works He worked with Phineas P. Paist and Walter De Garmo on the Douglas Entrance (1924) in Coral Gables, Florida, a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He also designed the Venetian Pool (1925) in Coral Gables, which is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The designs were strictly Denman's. The only thing Phineas Paist and Walter De Garmo added was their architect's seal because Denman was not a licensed architect. Denman designed all of the original entrances to Coral Gables and designed the original water tower in the shape of a lighthouse. Fink was artistic advisor for the City of Coral Gables. Denman Waldo Ross (1853–1935) was an American painter, art collector, and scholar of art history and theory. He was a professor of art at Harvard University and a trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Early life Denman Waldo Ross was born in 1853. He completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard University in 1875, and earned his doctorate in political economy from the same institution five years later. Career Ross came to be interested in art soon after this, and began teaching courses in design and art theory at Harvard by 1889. Ross would spend much of the rest of his life lecturing on these and related topics, working with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston on their burgeoning Oriental Art department, and traveling the world in search of artworks to add to his personal collection. Denman (17 April 2000 – 5 June 2018) was an Irish-bred National Hunt racehorse sired by Presenting. Known as ''The Tank'', Denman was widely known for his great rivalry with Kauto Star for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. This large horse with a front-running style won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2008. Background Denman was a very dark-coated chestnut gelding, bred in County Cork by Colman O'Flynn, who also bred his Grade One winning full brother, Silverburn. He was sent to the 2004 Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale as a four-year-old but this proved fruitless when one of the vets present said that the young "store" (a horse gelded early and intended for jump racing) could benefit from a hobday operation on his windpipe to improve his breathing.
