Patea ( ) is the third-largest town in South Taranaki District, New Zealand. It is on the western bank of the Pātea River, 61 kilometres north-west of Whanganui on . Hāwera is 27 km to the north-west, and Waverley 17 km to the east. The Pātea River flows through the town from the north-east and into the South Taranaki Bight. The Ireland women's cricket team represents Ireland in international women's cricket. Cricket in Ireland is governed by Cricket Ireland and organised on an All-Ireland basis, meaning the Irish women's team represents both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Ireland made its One-Day International (ODI) debut in 1987, against Australia, and the following year played at the 1988 World Cup, making the first of five appearances at the tournament. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). The 2001 Women's European Cricket Championship was an international cricket tournament held in England from 10 to 12 August 2001. It was the sixth edition of the Women's European Championship, and, for the final time, all matches at the tournament held One Day International (ODI) status. Four teams participated, with the hosts, England, joined by Ireland, the Netherlands, and Scotland. Denmark, which had participated in every prior edition, did not send a team, while Scotland was making both its tournament debut and its ODI debut. England, the winner of the past five editions of the tournament, selected only players under the age of 19 in its squad, although all the team's matches were granted official status.
