Deniliquin Council was a local government area in the Riverina region of south-western New South Wales, Australia. At the date of its abolition, Deniliquin Council was the last rural local government area in New South Wales left consisting only of a rural town. Deniliquin Council was proclaimed as the Municipality of Deniliquin on 16 December 1868. Amalgamation A 2015 review of local government boundaries by the NSW Government Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal recommended that the Deniliquin Council merge with the Conargo Shire to form a new council with an area of and support a population of approximately 9,000. Edward River Council
The Edward River Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of the Deniliquin Council with the surrounding Conargo Shire. The combined area covers the urban area of Deniliquin and the surrounding region to the north and west across the pastoral southern Riverina plains. The inaugural Mayor of the Edward River Council is Norm Brennan, elected by the Councillors on 20 September 2017. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of New South Wales (IPART) is an independent regulatory and pricing tribunal that oversees regulation in water, gas, electricity and transport industries in the Australian state of New South Wales. It was established in 1992 by Government of New South Wales to regulate the maximum prices for monopoly services by government utilities and other monopoly businesses, such as public transport. Murray Shire
Murray Shire was a local government area in the Riverina region of south western New South Wales, Australia. It included the towns of Moama and Mathoura. It was abolished on 12 May 2016 and its area merged with the Wakool Shire to establish the Murray River Council. The last mayor of Murray Shire was Cr. Thomas Weyrich, an independent politician. History The Murray Shire region was developed in the 1840s by squatters following the route of the overlanders as they drove cattle from Sydney to Adelaide in the late 1830s. From the 1860s onwards, the selectors, mainly from Victoria, moved onto the squatter's land, their interest agriculture. The settlements of Moama and Mathoura survived over the years as centres for the movement of agriculture produce and the growth of the timber industry. Conargo Shire
Conargo Shire was a local government area in the Riverina region in southern New South Wales, Australia. Localities The Shire was divided into four wards, and contained six villages - Conargo, Blighty, Mayrung, Pretty Pine, Wanganella and Booroorban. History Conargo Shire was established in 1907. In 2001 the former Windouran Shire was absorbed into Conargo Shire. This amalgamation resulted in an additional and another 387 residents. Before mergers in recent decades it was a common in New South Wales for rural shires to have their offices in an adjacent rural municipality (rural town).
