Arthur Jeffrey Dempster
Arthur Jeffrey Dempster (August 14, 1886 – March 11, 1950) was a Canadian-American physicist best known for his work in mass spectrometry and his discovery in 1935 of the uranium isotope 235U. Early life and education Dempster was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Toronto in 1909 and 1910, respectively. He travelled to study in Germany, and then left at the outset of World War I for the United States; there he received his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Chicago. Academic career Dempster joined the physics faculty at the University of Chicago in 1916 and remained there until his death in 1950. During World War II he worked on the secret Manhattan Project to develop the world's first nuclear weapons. John 'Jocky' Dempster (born 8 October 1948) is a former Scottish professional footballer who played as a right winger, mainly for Queen of the South and also St Mirren and Clyde. Career Dempster played with junior outfit Muirkirk before signing for Queen of the South at the start of the 1969–70 season. Dempster is best known for his time Queens in Dumfries. The 1970s goalscoring winger and penalty taker found the net 98 times during 355 first-team matches for the ''Doonhamers'' and is the sixth highest goalscorer in the club's history. Stuart Dempster (born July 7, 1936 in Berkeley, California) is a trombonist, didjeridu player, improviser, and composer. Biography After Dempster completed his studies at San Francisco State College, he was appointed assistant professor at the California State College at Hayward, and instructor at the San Francisco Conservatory (1960–66). During this period he was also a member of the Performing Group at Mills College, and from 1962 to 1966 was first trombonist in the Oakland Symphony Orchestra. In 1967–68, he was a Creative Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo under Lukas Foss. While there he helped organize the first commercial recording of Terry Riley's ''In C'', in the 1964 premiere of which he had also performed . Charles Stewart Dempster (15 November 1903 – 14 February 1974) was a New Zealand Test cricketer and coach. As well as representing New Zealand, he also played for Wellington, Scotland, Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Career Dempster began his career as a cadet on the Maryborough Chronicle in Queensland, and moved to Brisbane's ''Telegraph'', where he became the paper's chief political reporter.
